Got my #pinephone! I thought I would be using either whatever it came installed with, or #mobian as recommended by a couple people here. Unfortunately it turned out that #sxmo is doing quite a lot of things in ways that I like, and works much smoother than at least the default. I tried it before I even got to Mobian, because I did not expect to stick with it — the docs claimed many things either don't work or have very strange defaults. It seems they are slightly outdated though, as everything works pretty brilliantly.
The only thing I desperately need to use it as a main phone is a graphical #matrix client with E2EE support. It seems #fractal is still my best bet, but I still haven't gotten it to build to help with development...
"Installation: we recommend that you use Docker."
what I'm supposed to see: "hey, it's a simple one-liner! Such clean install, much wow."
what I actually see: "we couldn't figure out how to install this thing on anything but our own machine, but hey, here is a well-compressed image of our entire disk, use this instead so that we can stop trying"
@seachaint YES! THANK YOU!
> After an audit of the algorithm, the resume screening company found that the algorithm found two factors to be most indicative of job performance: their name was Jared, and whether they played high school lacrosse. Girouard’s client did not use the tool.

Wow, was I off-mark there!

It's mildly antisocial, but the fact that it even works points to a broken system somewhere anyway, so I'm not really condemning it. I just appreciate the layers of irony.
It's also definitely much less of a problem than anti-vaccine movements, so yeah...
@pettter
birbsite bullshit, cancel culture
And it's just.. Yeah, if you're being bullied you need to stand up for yourself. But if you're getting pushback or become Main Character of Twitter for a day or two, especially if you have a following already, the best way really _is_ to "just ignore it".
That can mean giving your account to a friend to deal with torrents of abuse for you, or Logging Off for a while, but the point is that you shouldn't land in "it should be illegal to @ me".
@im@pouet.it @pettter
Well, I'm in ZH and disgustingly healthy, so I don't expect to get mine any time soon.
I remember hearing stories about intercantonal vaccine tourism from Zürich to Schwyz, so I was surprized by the claim about Switzerland as a whole, good to know that the surprize was justified. The stories have a delicious multi-layered irony to them – stealing better functioning public services funded by the federal government from a lower taxes canton.
@pettter
Wait, Switzerland did? Aren't vaccinations organized by Cantons?

@deletescape you are an absolute legend. :D
Questions that come to mind – is most programming work labour without land? Is, somewhat paradoxically, the Could the Land in this case? Am I trying to strech the theory too much?

@mark@metalhead.club I have considered a Fairphone, but it doesn't really support running non-Android systems, so that's a huge downside for me.
Worth noting – modularity is not the same as hackability, even though both help with handling of faults. PinePhone is, as far as I can tell, note _very_ modular, any modularity has to be hacked in. Fairphone is not hackable at all (at least by design, you can obviously hack with it).
It's also quite a bit more expensive. <_<
I keep thinking of Robert Ashley's motto for my old music department, "If you're not weird, get out" and how to make a more nurturing, undergraduate-focused version of that.
I don't want normies to get out. I want them to de-normify at least temporarily: Be weird. Have fun. Do something absurd with your whole heart. Make something beautiful out of rubbish. Make something ugly our of pure tones. Find the place where your system starts to fail and sit there for a bit.
@pre Thanks for clarifying, I have seen this linked on the Mobian wiki. It doesn't support E2EE, so it doesn't really work for me as a client. I am considering helping them implement it, and in the meantime I can use the browser.
@mark@metalhead.club
I like the ties to the hacker ideology, or rather the practical results that follow. In this case it's mostly the fact that the hardware is relatively easily accessible, with instructions how to disassemble and modify it. It's likely I will never even use this feature, but I like having the possibility of attempting to fix something when it breaks.
Another consequence of the hacky approach is that there are lots of community-made resources on what can be done on the phone, both in the hardware as well as in the software realm. It's even moderately likely that I will do something software'y, but again I mostly like the possibility. I think the world would be better if all devices focused on these things.
Unrelated – I have never before seen the phrase "plump for", so you taught it to me. Recently that has been really rare, so thanks!
@pre Wow, I already ordered PinePhone based on the previous responses, but this implies it will be easier than I expected.
By Matrix working you mean in the browser I assume?
I know about bash and the rest of the typical Linux environment, these are the main reasons which attracted me to the idea. :D
Axolotl looks _way_ better than I expected.
Other than that I really don't have high requirements, so big/clunky/slow don't bother me much.
