I extracted the sxmo notification logic from my other project. So if you want to write software in (why?!) now you can using what is here: codeberg.org/timorl/sxmotify

@Moon
Oh gods, I _wish_ Google was soulless. One of the things that bothered me most when working there was that there was an actual _community_ of the employees, a pretty well organized one, including quite effective mutual help with various things, many kinds of activism, and, well, just fun for many people. It was heart-wrenching, seeing that such a self-organized (almost exclusively) community can actually work well and having this one as the best example -- one, that by it's very nature is twisted to serve a corporation, and what a corporation at that...

Not even the main reason why I left, but it bothered me quite a bit.
@evelyn

@robryk Hm, fair. Still, it's a very (surprizingly) niche usecase I feel.

polish is definitely the dutch of ukrainian

@maemachinebroke No it isn't. Bloody fake news...

"Owocowo" is, though. It means "fruity".
@AgathaSorceress

@robryk Cool stuff, but kinda seems to miss the point of most people using (to a lesser extent ba)sh -- it's everywhere. If you assume you can install arbitrary software then Python is already kinda an acceptable scripting solution, innit?

I would really like for more of my devices to come with this kind of documentation.

This in particular is a multimeter that belongs to my father; it was produced sometime in the late 80s in the Soviet block.

@robryk I don't think the issue is with inotify, it looks as if the sxmo people consciously wrote it ignoring file creation. I haven't seen a good reason for that, but I really hope one exists.

game design rambling

@emily Transferring upgrades is kinda what happens with some of the "jewel" systems -- I don't actually remember what they are called, but the thing e.g. in Diablo where you find upgrades in form of gemstones and they can be attached to some equipment. I'm not sure if Diablo itself lets you unattach them, but some games definitely do.

Oh goodness, I got it, if I create and fill the file in one go it gets ignored, I have to fiddle with it afterwards to trigger scripts... how silly.

I'm quite confused about notifications in , I create the files as specified and they actually make the phone buzz only very rarely (but sometimes!) and only then the diode turns green. They do show up in the notification menu though, so they are not completely wrong.

I know that the monitoring script has quite obvious async bugs, but it seems to work for smses and some other sxmo-initiated notifications pretty consistently, so I'm confused...

Anyway, anyone encountered similar problems?

@noelle Which in turn is based on a joke made ages ago in Zero Punctuation, which the author now regrets precisely because of how it is used.

@robryk Mieć olej w głowie? @moonbolt

@moonbolt There is a joke here about American imperialism and y'all being smart, but it only works in Polish. >:

@emily Given that this is about information I'm pretty sure you cannot get such a hard proof, because entropy famously only works one way.

For a softer proof you can publish the thing (or a cryptographic hash of it, if it shouldn't be immediately public) and ensure it is widely circulated and referred to -- this is kinda the converse of the approach you described, or at least uses the same ordering.

Interestingly (?) blockchains implicitly use this approach.
