@lelouchebag If you flip this left to right it becomes exactly a political compass meme.

@a_breakin_glass That's why the only soft from them I use is sxmo. At least the name is honest. @chjara

@robert_wolniak I learned it a bit, but it was only working while I did it together with my siblings – having people to talk/write to seems really crucial for language learning, at least for me. Now I am barely able to slap together a sentence, and even that only because it's such a simple language.

If you are into that I would also recommend playing some of the games that randomly have an Esperanto translation, e.g. Slay the Spire.

Again I'll write my question in English as hopefully more people will notice this post (besides everyone of my followers know English even if they are Polish so whatever xD).

I know only two languages: Polish as my mother tongue and English. A few months ago I decided to learn Esperanto. This language is simple, pleasant to learn and sometimes even more logical than English.

However when I speak to my friends and family they are always like "why do you learn that language? No one actually speaks it!" which actually pisses me off just a little (don't worry @teetotaller - I'm not talking about you - you just kindly asked :D).

As an English teacher I personally think that there is no such thing as "wasting your time learning language". If there is at least one person in the world that speaks certain language it's fine (in terms of Esperanto there are around 1,000 "native speakers" and less than 200,000 speakers who know Esperanto as their second language).

Personally what do you think about the idea of learning Esperanto? Do you have any personal experience with this language? Or did you meet any Esperantists?

@threeofswords@skull.website Only tangentially related, but I think freesewing.org/ might deserve a shoutout here. The patterns there are by design customizable to any size.

two kinds of dwarf fortress fights:

- 50-year long colossus siege

Since I got the second half of the chip today, could someone point me at instructions for installing Gentoo on it?

@chjara The most amazing thing about that guy is that while he mostly said all that impressively deranged stuff, he is also the guy that explicitly refused to call the terrorists "cowards" in the US media after the 9/11 attacks. Which is actual common sense, correct in every way, and apparently impossible to say for anyone else at that time.

@rysiek I went halfway through the registration process and then it did not want to cooperate with my (admittedly shitty) DynDNS provider, so I gave up. But maybe I should take this opportunity to upgrade all of my infrastructure at once, sooo... recommendations for good DynDNS providers? @kmic

@kmic @timorl Peter Sunde is trying to become a registrar, but ICANN pulled a fast one on him:
torrentfreak.com/icann-refuses

I'd say supporting njal.la might be a good way to help him find a way to become a registrar eventually.

@rysiek @kmic Thanks, I'll probably end up using njal.la!

What's a good domain name registrar? I've been using Freenom, because, well, free, but as I perhaps should have expected they seem to be at least partially a scam – they decided not to send me renewal emails and that my .tk domain is now a special word (bullshit, it's almost a random string of characters which does not return anything relevant in search) so I would have to pay for it, and quite a lot at that.

Now I'm quite willing to pay, but definitely not them. So what does the Fediverse recommend?

Sketch of The Analytical Engine invented by Charles .

The notes of are really REALLY something any programmer should read.

In particular, the famous Note G first lines are prophetic.

```
It is desirable to guard against the possibility of exaggerated ideas that might arise as to the powers of the Analytical Engine. In considering any new subject, there is frequently a tendency, first, to overrate what we find to be already interesting or remarkable; and, secondly, by a sort of natural reaction, to undervalue the true state of the case, when we do discover that our notions have surpassed those that were really tenable.
The Analytical Engine has no pretensions whatever to originate anything. It can do whatever we know how to order it to perform. It can follow analysis; but it has no power of anticipating any analytical relations or truths. Its province is to assist us in making available what we are already acquainted with. This it is calculated to effect primarily and chiefly of course, through its executive faculties; but it is likely to exert an indirect and reciprocal influence on science itself in another manner. For, in so distributing and combining the truths and the formulæ of analysis, that they may become most easily and rapidly amenable to the mechanical combinations of the engine, the relations and the nature of many subjects in that science are necessarily thrown into new lights, and more profoundly investigated. This is a decidedly indirect, and a somewhat speculative, consequence of such an invention. It is however pretty evident, on general principles, that in devising for mathematical truths a new form in which to record and throw themselves out for actual use, views are likely to be induced, which should again react on the more theoretical phase of the subject. There are in all extensions of human power, or additions to human knowledge, various collateral influences, besides the main and primary object attained.
I will be talking tomorrow at 6pm CEST about data colonialism, and how data extraction affects commonality in and outside of technological practice.
@h3artbl33d I have a homeserver and, as far as proper services go, I host Matrix and Syncthing on it. There is also a webserver, but it doesn't really host much at the moment. I mostly have it because I wanted a Linux machine I own that I can access from anywhere – so in a sense it's mostly a "SSH server" for moving files around and running various Linux commands whenever I need them.
All bare metal on a Gentoo installation, no real toolchain to speak of.
@chj0 @rats @aetios I don't see why this would be an indicator of reasoning (never mind moral significance). Many animals seem to be doing quite complicated forms of reasoning, including ones that require them to e.g. simulate themselves as existing in time, which seems like a much more important feature for defining conciousness/self awareness.
I'm also not sure if you know that many people think in nonverbal ways – does this mean they are not doing reasoning?
