Nice summary of some of the highlights of Germany's accelerating descent to a “schwellenland.” Add to this the energy debacle; even without blackouts, the skyrocketing energy prices will drive the industry away, leading to a loss of jobs, and so on.

@toxomat @erik_kwakkel UZH has responded on Twitter twitter.com/UZH_ch/status/1607 that the Dept of Romance Studies has been notified:

“Die UZH ist den Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis verpflichtet. Sie hat klar geregelte Strukturen und Abläufe für die Untersuchung von Fällen mit Verdacht auf wissenschaftliches Fehlverhalten. Das Romanische Seminar wurde informiert.”

1/ There's a lot of discussion on Mastodon right now about QT (quote-tooting). Some of the posts I've seen have been somewhat simplistic in their assumptions. I thought it would be useful to relate QTing to something I do know well: citations in research papers.

QTing is, of course, not exactly the same as citing. I'll get back to that at the end. But it is useful to consider the many reasons one might perform a citation:

@lauraingalli @LisaFaginDavis I trust the @snsf_ch to look into it—there are simply too many things that don’t add up.

Back online - lost power (including heat, water, and of course Internet) for 38 hours because of storm. Roads still closed here. 81mph//130km/h winds, yay. Snow, yay. Bigfoot wandering the back garden, yay. Two days with no news about twitter - almost makes up for it :)

Things are going well, the robot brought a round of coffee for the astronauts and the engineers.

@shriramk @martinsteiger A nice change from dealing with drug cases (which appears to be the specialty of the lawyer whose photo has been used).

@shriramk Yeah, “suppress” looks like a language issue to me, from French “supprimer,” i.e., that positions have been cut.

@shriramk @martinsteiger While the discussion was ongoing on Twitter and Mastodon, pictures and affiliations disappeared from the Website, names changed, facsimiles in the book changed.

@shriramk @martinsteiger The book projects of Prof. Rossi (with her own “publisher”) have been funded by the SNSF with grants for OA book publications.

@shriramk @martinsteiger This is already bad enough, but it then turned out that Rossi had set up a foundation in Ticino and a variety of dubious foundations and companies (with an accommodation address in London). The “employees” seem to be either family or fake (with stock photo portraits), plus some real academics, who are probably unaware of what's going on.

@shriramk @martinsteiger No, this time it’s a romance philology “titularprofessor” at (at least formerly). The starting point was this blog post by Peter Kidd: mssprovenance.blogspot.com/202

I guess the affair will be an unpleasant surprise for some institutions here in Switzerland after the holidays… As @martinsteiger put it, “What began as ordinary case of plagiarism, has now become an actual scientific thriller.”

#4 in the year-end #music retrospective: another instrumental, "The Stars Don't Know They Are Alone".

Another experiment: this time with #Cardinal, a eurorack simulator.

I used it to create some basic sounds and then played some parts over it.

It's...very chill.
