I just filled in a survey about the state of #academia in #Germany, and was really stumped on the question "How do you spend your work time, specifically?" I wanted to check 40% teaching and 40% research and also 40% advising students and certainly 40% admin meetings... and they didn't even have a separate category for email... 🤔

When scholars without expertise in infrastructure reform encounter the goals of the reform movement, such as e.g., replacing academic journals,

they sometimes reflexively defend the status quo that served them well, e.g.:

“You ‘open’ wackaloons are forcing your revolution on us, against our academic freedom!”

I was asked to write a *one-page* cheat sheet with the evidence to counter such a reflex:

Can you/we improve on that?

Censé à faire quelque chose ? Censé de faire quelque chose ? Mwhaha, non. C’est évidemment juste construit avec un verbe à l’infinitif.

Help! Filemaker!

A while ago I saw a thread about FilemakerPro (mostly discussing the "why") but can't find it again... but does anyone have any suggestions about how to open/convert a Filemaker database into some sensible format, without having Filemaker?

For reasons that are unlikely to become clear at the moment, I've been given a dataset in this format, and being able to do anything with it would involve not having it in this format. Almost any technique (via CSV, SQL, etc.) would be good!

Wow, so the other day I shared what #Microsoft does when you search to download #Firefox from #Edge* but they go one step further for #Chrome.

(I have zero love for either surveillance capitalist but, my goodness, what absolute asshattery. Having spent more time than I’d like testing in #Windows these past two days, I constantly feel like some malevolent entity is trying to exploit me at every turn. Because one is. This OS is a case study in hostile #design.)

«Am Ende werde es zu einer Volksabstimmung kommen und der Bundesrat müsse entsprechend sauber arbeiten. ‹Und das macht er›, so der Wirtschaftsminister.

Beruhigung dürfte diese Aussage Parmelins bei den Vertretern der Wissenschaft kaum auslösen.»

Ich denke inzwischen, dass eine wiederassoziation in 10 jahren nur noch im allerbesten fall möglich ist.

The Globus INK (1967) is a remarkable piece of Soviet spacecraft equipment. Its rotating globe showed cosmonauts the position of their Soyuz spacecraft. An electromechanical analog computer, it used gears, cams, and differentials to compute the position. Let's look inside 🧵

Théâtre de Beaulieu in #Lausanne was built to plans by local architect Marcel Maillard between 1952 and 1954. It was inaugurated on November 19, 1954 with a concert by the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under the direction of Ernest Ansermet. It was, and still is, the largest theatre in #Switzerland. #architecture #photography

Back in the Usenet days, people used to put a "now playing" line in their posts & it was always a little performative & pretentious but damn it turned me onto a lot of new music.
