“Google’s new phones now use AI to let you edit photos to a degree never seen before, exchanging sad faces for happy ones and overcast afternoons for perfect sunsets.”
Ok so do we want photos to remind us of that day, or makeup how the day actually went?

Terrific investigation of the secretive multi-year rightwing campaign, pro-patriarchy, pro-bigotry, anti-“woke,” successfully attacking public education. Damning emails mined by Nicholas Confessore. #GiftLink https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/01/20/us/dei-woke-claremont-institute.html?unlocked_article_code=1.PU0.wEhm.C2_iYDdN6QvJ&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
@weberam2 @petersuber @OpenAlex You *can* get your data from the API and build a quick author page from it (I wrote an R howto here: https://leonardblaschek.github.io/replace_google_scholar.html) and do any manual filtering of the works that you need.
It's not as straightforward as setting up a GS page, but it'll give you a lot more control.

Very cool paper describing how self-organizing #complexity arises in neural connections
We just sent out our last tweet for the foreseeable future, announcing that this Mastodon account is our only social media account now.
We have come to the conclusion that Twitter/X is no longer relevant for #SciComm. Our peers are here. Thank you!
Other compelling reasons for quitting Twitter and moving into the Fediverse are given in this petition: https://www.openpetition.de/petition/online/open-letter-to-the-german-rectors-conference-hrk-on-the-use-of-social-media#petition-main
I've easily found tech people on Mastodon but it's been harder to find #psychology and #neuroscience people, and I've noticed I followed mostly men, too. I've been consciously following new people when I see boosts, but it's really slow.
Then I found this tool, which finds people who are followed by people you follow, based on public information (so no permissions required!). Really nice way to get more of a diverse feed.
(And if I've just followed you today, hi!)
Just bought tickets for #SleaterKinney April 4th in Vancouver. So fucking stoked
The latest blog post by #ErikHoel makes the case that #neuroscience suffers from a #ReplicabilityCrisis crisis going beyond the well-known replication issues in psychology. Sample sizes are small, brain “areas” may be an artifact, and researchers are floundering for lack of a generally accepted theory of consciousness. https://open.substack.com/pub/erikhoel/p/neuroscience-is-pre-paradigmatic?r=2cb3jc&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post
@OpenAlex (#OpenAlex) has a new and friendly user interface.
https://openalex.org/
PS: The new interface is wonderfully simple and should bring this powerful tool to more users. Next time you have a research question, try it before #GoogleScholar or your other stand-bys. Or try both and compare. OpenAlex searches titles, abstracts, and full-text, and has unrivaled scope, indexing over 250m works from 250k sources.
@weberam2 sounds like you might want to check the eternal war between ESR and RMS especially since (as I recall) the intersection of business and open source was/is one of the major points of contention between the two philosophies.
In other words, you might find that debate particularly relevant because it directly questions whether opensource actually is the opposite of business in the first place, with lots of discussion on both sides.
I'm someone who argued fifteen years ago against Linux fanatics who wanted to pretend #Linux was a viable replacement for the average user for #Windows. As much of a #FOSS enthusiast as I am, that simple wasn't true at the time - Windows was a much smoother experience in general than Linux.
Today though, I can confidently recommend a major Linux distro and know that they'll have as smooth an experience as they would on Windows. Not (just) because Linux has improved by leaps and bounds, but also because Microsoft seem to be doing a great job driving Windows to the ground.
Everyone loves puppies. And they don't stay puppies forever. His name is Archie, he's a Boston Terrier, and he's 4 months old. #dogsofmastodon
I want to give a talk about #opensource
This includes #openscience, #freeware, the different #licences, etc.
Essentially, things people create and then distribute to everyone for free. The opposite of business / capitalism.
I'll also want to talk about #enshittification and #fediverse
Can anyone point me to good resources? Explainers? Historical perspectives? Ethical perspectives? Philosophical perspectives?
I'd also like to take about any complexities in the issue. I don't want to be biased.
That’s it, no more use for Google Scholar! Have been looking forward to this day! Amazkng work Team @OpenAlex! 🚀

Someone on LinkedIn pointed out that #OpenAI doesn’t use an LLM for their support chat, but has instead opted to use some extremely limited decision tree. Which is both understandable, telling, and fucking hilarious.
