Predictions on the Fediverse
Since Gab came on, mass reaction and over-reaction has led to the following new phenomena:
* Instances that pre-emptivly block whole swaths of others
* Instance admins trading block recommendations like baseball cards
* Other minor papercuts making "silos" and larger instances less attractive.
The ideal of a relatively uncontroversial person being able to be on a well-established instance and be able to reach/contact p much anybody else on the network, is gone now
@fitheach how about history | grep thing
@pea gen4 is best pokemon!
@lain 'twas a good social engineering campaign, I'll give them that.
@bdmarotta it might sound like a stupid answer, but the best way to minimize the data on you that is out there -- is to put less data out there. Stop using the internet when you don't have to. Don't visit websites that use captcha if you can avoid it.
But, you'd basically have to go completely offline in order to not be tracked at all. Just being aware of who you are connecting to, and what information you are giving them is a good first step. Perhaps try giving the browser addon "umatrix" a try
They do that by manipulating the defaults. Mastodon itself has defaults (I default to talking to the world, you probably do too!). If we default to privacy or default to creating speedbumps so we can choose who sees us, we may hide ourselves from the solidarity of our fellow travellers, and also risk erasing ourselves from history. 11/11
What does this have to do with fighting Nazis? Well, some of the suggested and understandable solutions I've seen, consist of sketching out ways to deny Nazi's access to the public parts of Mastodon. I think it's worth thinking about this, but I also want to flag the price: it's easy to work out ways that also default to being closed to anyone in the wider public space; to accept less visibility as a compromise for protection from the Nazi gaze. 8/?
@ramona currently ~3hr into pokemon platinum (for the thousandth time). I love retroarch! Not sure exactly what might be wrong with your configuration but heres mine
@espectalll I don't think you take the fascist social control strategy of the people trying to find the perfect way to block any person that might disagree with them very seriously though.. Glad you don't take the Hitler comparison that seriously I guess
"the racist white person reading this"
@jacethechicken Illegal immigrants do have the Constitutional right (as a Human created by God) to due process under the law. They currently have this right, and nobody is trying to take it away. The Trump administration surely wants to guarantee the right to a speedy trial for these immigrants, but every single one of them does see a courtroom. https://www.usa.gov/deportation
I'm interested in what makes you believe they don't have these rights.
@espectalll hey I know that it's silly and gets tossed around a lot but you might wanna take it somewhat serious
@freemo I didn't post a dick pic, I reported one, and my report comment was "NSFW no content warning"
@espectalll One last little tidbit for later: When you say things like "how do we solve the Gab problem" it reminds me of a guy who died in the 40's
@espectalll Hey that's ok. I kinda pounced on your status out of the federated timeline. Maybe it's something you could think about though, if you feel like it.
@espectalll I guess you could remain federated and create a safe space of a few servers. It just seems kind of silly to me, that you would be willing to allow some people to be admins of servers only if they have political consensus with you to maintain the illusion of freedom/diversity of opinion to the userbase. What makes this different from Jack Dorsey?
@espectalll Yeah, basically. If you don't want to connect to *everyone*, what's even the point of being federated?
@espectalll The best solution is probably an invite only safe-space instance, to be honest.
@thomasorus Love to hear that there exists a frontend dev who likes lowtech websites! What is your favorite web stack to work with or are you an html/css purist?
