A gentle reminder to folks who are new to Mastodon. In solidarity with those in the disabled community who rely on screen readers, we ask that you:
* Add alt text/image descriptions when you post media
* Capitalize the first letter of every word in a hashtag #LikeThis
#CowsOfMastodon is great. Excellent cows, no notes on the cows. But, #Moostodon was right there.
Rivers meander over their course as they continuously erode and deposit sediment. Harold Fisk, a geologist and cartographer working for the US Army Corps of Engineers, mapped the meanders of the mighty Mississippi in 1944 and the results are mesmerizing. They also beautifully illustrate geology’s Law of Superposition: newer and younger sediments are deposited on top of older sediments. We see thousand of years of course changes. You can unravel the layers by eye by noting which layer cuts others
Hi everyone! If you are interested in anything related to the atmosphere/air quality and you want more people to follow, please check out the list we have going!
This is opt-in only and it is also being compiled into a GitHub list by @jorge (see the note on the page). Please boost to help reach new folks!
If you're new to #Mastodon, two tips: first, do an #Introduction post, it will help some people find you. Second, make sure your profile is complete (avatar, bio, a few links), you're more likely to get follow backs if you do that.
Feels like we're starting to near critical mass with #weather folks moving on over.

While we're on the topic of hashtags, #CowsOfMastodon will brighten your day.
Welcome to the fediverse, #wxtwitter! Or #wxtooter, #wxmastodon, or whatever we are calling ourselves now. Hashtags seem to be the optimal way to find people here, so there you go!
I see there is a #MusicMonday hashtag which is perfect because I was going to ask about music anyway.
What music helps you focus on work tasks like #programming, #reading, or #writing? I've tried a lot of different things but I think my favorites so far are the Coding Mode playlist on Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX5trt9i14X7j?si=d753e5c4bd5c49c7) and Brain.fm (https://www.brain.fm/).
In the interest of learning new (new-ish I guess since it's not really a new language?) things, I've been working through some introductory #rubyonrails guides. It really makes me wish #python had a built-in template project like "rails new" that creates all the default config settings and files rather than having to build all that from scratch. Unless it has that and I just missed it along the way?
We are extremely excited to share with the climate community (and beyond) the new and improved "Climate Data Guide" (by NCAR).
Explore the background behind 100s of different #weather and #climate datasets, along with the statistical tools to analyze them.
➡️ Check it out at https://climatedataguide.ucar.edu/, and do share with your networks! #OpenScience #Data
Also, feel free to reach out to the board of advisors if you have any suggests or data inputs! 🥰
Sat in my hotel room reading up on the #NASA #JPL SPOC (https://github.com/nasa-jpl/SPOC) Machine Learning model for #Mars Rovers and their ability to classify Soil and Objects using their onboard computers. Very cool stuff.
A celebration of the Cloud Optimized Geotiff (with its emoji) (COG). https://www.cogeo.org/ It is just a geotiff 'aimed at being hosted on a HTTP file server, with an internal organization that enables more efficient workflows on the cloud'
Why is it transformative? Because no more downloading huge files! at v3.2 can read -so just stream them in. How to find them using? Using STAC https://stacspec.org/en enabled catalogs. eg the STAC API Browser in plugins
Twitter was really useful for finding people to write about. I’d often stumble across incredible stories of discovery, innovation and leadership. I hope #ScienceMastodon can be the same. If you come across extraordinary, inspirational #WomenInSTEM / researchers from other historically excluded groups, please let me know! #TwitterMigration
#Goodmorning mastodon 🌅- Hope you have a great #Monday! You got this! (I’m using some #coffee to help get the day started though) ☕️
Isn’t it great to #toot in peace?? and be friendly again? :)
I love that #BikeTooter is trending on here! My husband is eagerly waiting on the arrival of his first e-bike that he ordered last month. We don't live in the most bike-friendly of places (Oklahoma), but he is going try commuting with it and see how it goes. 🚲 ⚡
Hi Mastodon! I am new at this platform so bear with me. I am about two weeks into my new role as a technical project manager/product owner in the private sector after working as a researcher in the government research lab space for about 15 years, and I'm looking to expand my horizons and my network here.
My particular expertise/interests are in remote sensing, meteorology, hydrology, climate impacts, machine learning, data science, and open source software development and tools. Never stop learning!
