mainstream news: distrust in research is because of all these dangerous misinformationists who won’t just obey unquestioned
research community: haha we’re bad at our jobs actually https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2021/07/05/time-to-assume-that-health-research-is-fraudulent-until-proved-otherwise/
@icedquinn Isn't this why we have peer reviews. ? @freemo or am I missing somnething ?
@icedquinn @freemo is this why we want better open access to science papers and journals to make the process more open. ?
Open access, open review, peer review, and replication are all necessary elements to detect fallacies (whether intentional as fraud or not). Any of them, when applies in a healthy environment, will reduce fallacies, but they arent perfect.
@freemo @icedquinn Sounds good, It may be something I can talk to people about if / when working in a school or almost certainly at the a STEM group which I am trying to set up at the moment,
barrier to meeting at the moment is room at the library is owned by local council and we need their go ahead to use the rooms.
Sounds like something that we cna also add resources to on the discourse forum, collate links / ideas so going forward hopefully people (esp young people ) will have the right mindset, the rest of us can hold science to account especially if public funded via taxation.
Just a thought that, but i guess there are refinements within that.
I've been wanting to start a open-access open-review journal myself for sometime that might do well in that effort.
@freemo @icedquinn I have a post on my blog with a video I have here scheduled for the 26th
https://personaljournal.ca/paulsutton/open-access-video
so feel free to link to the video, if that helps.
I think there is now more of a push towards this, so I guess it need to be publicised.
Hope to get more people interacting on discourse is an enigma for me at the moment, despite me trying to post content and linking from my blog.
It is hard to determine the education level of posts. Either make it so simple and dumbed down you kinda attract everyone and don't get any real discussion or aim higher and it is harder to attract people.
I would rather treat people as if they can have really intelligent discussions, hopefully enough so any comments are backed up by links to where they get information from.
I think that makes sense.
