Experimental cancer therapy shows success in more than 70% of patients in global clinical trials
Directs patients’ immune system to kill multiple myeloma cells
https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/973924
"The therapy, known as a bispecific antibody, binds to both T cells and multiple myeloma cells and directs the T cells—white blood cells that can be enlisted to fight off diseases—to kill multiple myeloma cells. The researchers described this strategy as 'bringing your army right to the enemy.'"
Adventures in nanotech: growing a metallic snowflake
Scientists working at the level of atoms are manipulating metals, opening up possibilities for creating new materials.
https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2022/12/09/nano-structures.html
"Why’s that significant? Because coaxing individual atoms to cooperate is leading to a revolution in engineering and technology via nanomaterials. (And creating snowflakes is cool.)"
@nasa I would hope that any future moon missions is sent with a plentiful supply of Duct tape etc, so people cam make repairs to any equipment on the moon.

Welcome to the Fediverse, we are #AllWelcomeHere,
Good luck with your PhD, sounds like an interesting area of study.
Fact of the day: You don't need to be a full-time programmer, to contribute to #LibreOffice! 锁琨珑 (Kevin Suo) is an accountant, and helps to fix bugs in his spare time: https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2022/12/12/community-member-monday-%e9%94%81%e7%90%a8%e7%8f%91-kevin-suo/
At least we are heading in the right direction and the EU are getting on with it, Online safety bill in the UK should hit statute books sometime in 2023. not before time.
@pluralistic
We published a report last year that also goes through a bunch of arguments for banning the entire surveillance-based advertising model.
With the DSA, the EU will roll out a ban of advertising based on sensitive personal data and surveillance-based advertising to children, which is a step in the right direction but falls short of solving the wider issue.
Splashdown.
The @NASA_Orion spacecraft successfully completed a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean at 12:40pm ET (17:40 UTC) as the final major milestone of the #Artemis I mission. https://go.nasa.gov/3Fl7kzQ

Cool story from earlier this year: Scientists announced a breakthrough in determining life's origin on Earth—and maybe Mars. They discovered that RNA forms spontaneously on basalt lava glass, which was abundant on Earth 4.35 billion years ago and still exists on Mars today.
What causes basalt lava glass? Meteor impacts and volcanic activity. So now I can't stop thinking of meteors as sperm crashing into the egg of the earth and getting BUSY. ☄️🌎 🐣

@protecttruth Agreed , we should follow the science but also ask questions as doing so helps with understanding and new discoveries.
@creatinglake @mastodonusercount
Good point and how many of those new sign ups result in people posting ? You would expect mastodon to be flooded with posts with the newhere tag or introductions.
@jzik I'm always fascinated how such a tiny piece of electronics can contain the full depth and power of a #linux computer, including full #python running in #docker containers managed by #kubernetes.
I just found that gandi.net posted an article on how to set up your own fediverse instance. They mention how to host both Mastodon or Pleroma using their services. Pretty good job, guys. https://news.gandi.net/en/2022/12/how-to-join-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-using-gandi-hosting-offer/

One of my favorite things about #Twitter was how easily I could connect with various academics from different fields and different countries. What is the best way to do this on #Mastodon? Are there certain accounts that share & boost a broad range of academic & scientific perspectives? #academia #science #phd #scicomm @sociology @communicationscholars @psychology
from @jeffjarvis : "I've never been one to call Twitter a hellsite as I've valued conversation with countless of you here. But Musk by the day keeps dragging us into his hell. Please consider moving to Mastodon. Here's my guidance, text + video:"
