Teleportation: if we ever get them, they absolutely MUST exhibit some behavioural commonalities with a relational database—notably they must exhibit ACID properties: atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability.

If teleportation isn't ACID you ain't getting me in that booth!

At #37c3 they have IRC, and Matrix for text and for voice they setup their own LTE/2G/3G/SIP/DECT network where you bring whatever phone-like device and pick a 4 digit phone number.

Meanwhile in the USA for #defcon they just paid Discord money and told everyone to accept their privacy policy, and even the DC Privacy Village asks people to sign up for Slack and Google.

People ask why I fly to CCC from the USA. It is because that is the closest place to find a thriving hacker culture.

4 years ago: Wuhan Health Commission sends urgent notice reporting cases of unidentified pneumonia. It's the first official word about COVID-19.

Did you know that the FSF now has a Friends membership tier? It doesn't have all the benefits of the standard or student associate membership tiers, but it does include the option to receive a USB membership card with Trisquel GNU/Linux, an FSF membership badge, access to the member forum, and some other perks, all while supporting software freedom. It is really depressing that we are not getting much news about the horrible situation in Gaza.

Isrsel is killing every reporter who dares to expose their crimes, including their families, in surgical attacks blowing up their houses.

One by one, they are getting killed.

The internet is at less than 10% of it's previous speed.

Mobile network is cut off to non existence.

In the mean time, people dying, by the 100s, not just by bombings, but lack of medicine, lack of proper care, lack of clean water, lack of food.

Everything you can imagine, is happening in Gaza today and some more.

But we can't see it.

We can't feel their despair.

Their helplessness.

Their disappointment.

All while the whole "civilized west" is sending arms and money to help this outrageous atrocities to go on uninterrupted.

A low carbon abundance in planetary atmospheres, detectable with #JWST, could be a signature of #habitability.

If a terrestrial #planet has substantially less carbon dioxide in its atmosphere compared to other #planets in the same system, it could be a sign of liquid water — and possibly #life — on that planet’s surface.

This signature of depleted carbon dioxide is the only sign of habitability that is detectable with current instruments.

Could you make a similar one for SubStack please.

I think people want to leave but can't leave, or they will face a huge financial hit, especially if they are self-employed and.

Let's see what we can do to help people.

I have enjoyed this last year of photographing Glastonbury Tor in all weathers. I think to sum it up for me, it is a passion and I truly feel a connection with this magical place like I know many others do. These are a few of my favourites. Have a fab New Years Eve.

The tories are now refered to as the NASTY party for good reason and several MPs have made similar comments.

What is needed is perhaps proper support for families, good jobs (they were meant to be getting rid of zero hour contracts.) Funding for schools, family centres and to ask people how can we support you.

@RickiTarr

I feel the same way, every time the BBC mention HAMAS it is suffixed by "designated a terrorist group by the UK government" while this is the case, it probably effects how the news is reported. Don't get me started on the uK daily mail, they are totally behind Isreal, they reported the story from one of the hostages who was released, it will be interesting how the reports from the BBC of treatment of Palestinians seen today, possible reports of torture, cigarette burns and the IDF maintaining their soldiers follow international law.

While the latter may be the case, there is always room for some rogue incident or element to over step the mark. There is a lot of anger and hatred, so the desire for revenge beyond the operational remit, is going to be there.

None of that can justify actions however.

Being impartial is very difficult in these situations, esp as when as I have said before there is a need for instant updates leaving little time to establish proper facts before reporting, so perhaps this is the main issue.

Ever wonder why when you were a kid in Oregon, you learned about the Iroquois and Cherokee tribes of the Eastern USA but nothing about local Native Americans? Why you learned about the pioneers crossing the plains on the Oregon Trail, but nothing about what they did once they arrived?
...Or maybe you didn't even notice how much was left out until this very moment, reading my words?
Here is the missing piece.
"Tribal Histories of the Willamette Valley" by David G. Lewis.
Fair warning, this book made me so upset that I cried. Not at the author, he's done an excellent job. At the astonishing cruelty, violence, and dishonesty shown to native people by (many) white settlers. At how little they asked for, and still didn't get. At how little is left of the ecosystems that sustained people and wildlife and were carefully maintained by native people. At how much astonishing wealth has accrued to those who stole from natives, even to the modern day.
Land acknowledgement statements are not enough! If you are a white person in Oregon, you need to read this.

I think the first step to tackling this is to get over the mindset that there is zero hope. Build some confidence, self esteem then work on how to help people or more usefully help people to help themselves by beliving in people.

@LadyDragonfly I feel like skills exist in a sliding window between "i remember when I couldn't even do X" and "Z seems impossible and I'll never be able to do it", and you're always at Y. it's really hard to have a sense of perspective about how far you've come, but making recordings helps (even if relistening is the cringiest experience ever).

@voxpopsicle @LadyDragonfly

I try and encourage people to keep old versions or attempts at projects, so that in say 12 months time when they have made improvements they can look back and see how they have developed over time.

@JackTheCat

It is about time regulators had some bite in this country, break the rules, face the consequences, which are clearly laid out and with little room to get out of.

What is the point of rules or laws without proper enforcement, esp when those laws are meant to PROTECT people from some sort of harm of mistreatment.

Why should others follow the law, when they see so many people freely breaking the law and exploiting others.

@lovelylovely

It would also be interesting as in the UK staff / teachers get assaulted and told by kids and theiir parents (usually) they can't be touched. They seem to know exactly what they are doing and saying sometimes too.

What about measures that if a judge does not give a max prison term, say 10 years, and only gives 5 years, if that person commits the same offence (e.g rape) perhaps the judge can be sued as if that person was in prison they would not have committed the rape against the victim at least.
