This sort of behaviour by people is dispicable, what is more dispicable is that he is BLACK, the Black commuinity have enough problems as it is, e.g racial profiling, racism, discrimination, lower opportunity. This sort of thing will probably set their hard work back again, and give ammunition to the racists who think that black people should not serve in the US Supreme court.

He is a disgrace, not only to the USA, the US Supeme court but every black person in the US who is campaigning for a equality and a better life. Clarence Thomas must know the history of the black community and the fight for equality. He could have used that position in the supreme court to help equality grow.

I really hope someone throws the book at him and he is made to suffer the consequences of his actions.

Alan Turing is widely recognized as a hero and a genius. He’s considered the father of theoretical computer science and AI.

But he was also a gay man whom the British government chemically castrated.

Turing killed himself because of the way his government treated him.

What more might he have done had he lived?

As this wave of hatred sweeps the US, I wonder how many gay and trans Alan Turings we’ve already lost, and how many we’ll continue to lose.

This brings up the issue of screen readers, as long lists of repetitive hashtags make life difficult for blind people who rely on screen readers to read posts out loud.

This issue can be reduced by putting all the hashtags in a list at the end of the post, with a "Hashtag list" warning before the list.

However, this still isn't perfect, and the current system of tagging has many other issues too.

I've tried to suggest a possible solution here:

How far we've come in the last 50 years!

Back in 1972, a team at JPL spent days pasting together photographs taken by Mariner 9 by hand to create a 4-foot globe of Mars. nasa.gov/image-feature/technol

Let’s talk about Uranus … the planet 😉

In this new #JWST image of the ice giant, we see Uranus shining in reflected near-infrared sunlight.

We can see 11 of the known 13 rings (although some are so bright they blend together in the image). We also see at least 6 of the planet’s 27 known moons.

So maybe along side these anti competition laws, we need to improve access to legal aid, improve (if needed) laws on Libel, slander and deframation, harassment etc, so that those who become victims, can sue for damages, not just the perpertrator but the big tech companies openly facilitating this.

However as fedi gains ground, we need to be careful we don't get caught in the crossfire, and any rules are still robust but do take into account how decentralisation works.

I feel that we don't need new laws, we just need to ensure existing laws cover everything with new and future tech (e.g AI).

This has started to happen, but where there are barriers then these need to be removed, while of course at the same time ensuring the safeguards are in place to avoid malicious or counter litigation.

So will this help to stop planned expansion of Lithium mining in Portugal and Sweden?

BREAKING: In a huge victory for humanity, the European Parliament voted to list "ecocide" as an international atrocity crime on par with genocide. Ecocide statutes could soon be part of domestic law in all 27 countries of the EU.

More serious progress. @ecocidelaw @marietouss1

The number of new registrations on Mastodon.world :mw: has been a bit higher the last few days, above 200 per day.

We have now passed the 160.000 registered accounts.

Also, for the first time since the November user-inflow, the number of Monthly Active Users has gone up, now around 35.500

Welcome everyone! 👋

Excellent video on "What is the Frame Rate of the Human Eye?"

(Spoiler: Whatever number you're thinking right now, you're wrong. The answer is none.)

Also has some receipts to back up that claim. I feel like this is important watching for anyone interested in film or displays.

I had not heard of this, but I did JUST comment on another climate related post here and expressed concerns about the environmental damage of extracting Lithium, so this post is excellent timing.

@Fenix

Good question, we could also ask should President Putin be charged with war crimes over the invasion of Ukraine.

Politicians make the laws or sign international laws, so they should be expected to abide by those same laws.

@kasilas

Agreed, big tech needs to be put in its place, as in they are there to abide by rules or face consequences, thing is they have got away with so much for so long they appear to think they can act with impunity.

@helenczerski Agreed, with this fully. I am also concerend about the use of Lithium, for batteries in terms of the damage being caused to ecosystems to get at the Lithium in the first place.

Surely we should be investing in Hydrogen as a power source more.

@xtaldave

I will probably be at an american football game anyway.
