Within any group of people, be it protest marches, or sports fans to / from games, there will Always be a rogue element out to cause trouble.
Back in the 80s some English teams were banned from Europe IIRC, This is no longer needed, we have the ability to combine intel on known troublemakers, with video footage and good old fashioned policing and hard work to ensure gatherings happen in a safe way, identify problems before hand and take action.
The Majority do not want trouble, if the police work closely with the majority they should be able to take pre emptive action.
Sadly the relationship with the police has now go to the point where there is zero trust and this can't happen.
@rmounce wrote a piece on this recently, and imo his conclusions are correct
"I talked about a tale of two open access journals catering for the same authors, one of which has author-side article processing charges (APCs): SoftwareX, and the other: Journal of Open Source Software (JOSS), which does not charge APCs.
they publish a high volume of papers, with over 300 in SoftwareX and over 400 in JOSS in 2023, challenging the notion that “diamond open access can’t scale”. However, that is where their similarities end.
Yet two proprietary journal indexers have not given these journals equal treatment. Scopus (Elsevier) and Web of Science (Clarivate) have accepted SoftwareX into their indexes but have refused to index JOSS, despite multiple applications from the JOSS team
The best solution here is not to beg for JOSS to be included in these proprietary indexes, but rather to call institutions and departments relying on Scopus and Web of Science to review and change their policies."
https://council.science/current/blog/open-science-round-up-january-2024/
Refusal to index JOSS is transparently an attempt to deter submissions to a journal that costs next to nothing to operate while providing high quality, collaborative, open peer review that perfectly matches the needs of the community it serves. JOSS is too compelling of an example of what waits on the other side after the abolition of commercial publishing - and refusal to index shows us what barriers remain to reach it.
Agreed
If dark mode is not suitable for some people but is for others, then surely finding out before hand helps the presenter to choose a method and adapt how they present. I find dark mode easier to read in some cases,
There seems to be a lot of calls from the Uk military circles we need to boost the number of troops so we are ready to counter threats from hostile states. While I agree with this, it seems that there is an equal threat from hostile states in terms of cyber attacks, which may actually be the first step in any new conflict as a cyber attack can disrupt essential infrastructure.
Calls for an increase in or cyber defenses seem to be falling on deaf ears, despite the fact criminals are now using more and more sophisticate techniques to catch victims.
If OpenAI can be sued for copyright infringement, can they be equally held accountable if their technolgy is used to inpersonate a persons voice, or images (photo, video), perhaps now they have created this technology they need to be held to account for what people use it for.
At some point in the not too distant future, I can see a situaion where a fake video leads to a miscalculation or misunderstanding that starts a much wider conflict or situation that once started can't easily be resolved.
"I love Israel, & I love Palestine...the Jewish people deserve self-determination & a homeland...the Palestinian people certainly deserve the same. I may be the clearest Jewish voice in the House of Representatives saying that the only way to achieve a secure homeland for the Jewish people is to fully realize the political & human rights of the Palestinian people. That’s principled. It’s also practical...I’m not going to back down from it, no matter how many millions of dollars they throw at me"
Even better, ask the audience how best to present and adapt accordingly

‘Don’t send us aid if it’s going to get us killed’
“We have come here to get our hands on some aid,” one Palestinian man told Quds News Network after the attack on al-Rashid Street, southwest of Gaza City, which killed and wounded dozens of civilians.
“I have been waiting since yesterday. At about 4:30 this morning, trucks started to come through. Once we approached the aid trucks, the Israeli tanks and warplanes started firing at us as if it was a trap,” said the man.

Agreed, we seem to have a whole group of people who have some sort of sense of entitlement to do what they want. Try and speak up you risk being accused of something, so a minor incident you get accused of something far bigger.
As you point out here, the two people have lots of followers who will follow that example, no one has the strength to stand up and say NO, the law ; rules DO apply to everyone.
I feel like the Israeli government's demands that the world give them a pass or be deemed antisemitic and Trump's demands for immunity for all actions, including criminal actions, spring from the same wellspring in hell.
There are some modern high-level con-artistry going on.
End of the day, any new law will tick the box of their promise to end no fault evictions, so they will claim they have done that, they will have done. Even if the law doing is so full of loopholes it is pretty worthless unless you are in a specific set of circumstances.
We are heading for an election, they are just tying up the loose ends in what ever way they can to try and win the votes, hopefully people will see through the smokescreen and not vote them back in.

If you want an alternative services such as WriteAs may be an option.
Another plan, is to put an explicit statement on blogs forbidding the use of data to train Ai systems such as OpenAI, and add to that a statement that changing terms and conditions that FORCE users to accept data sale etc are not considered explicit consent to the use of data.
Or something to that effect, I am not quite sure how to write the above.
