"If you work from home or run a business, Nextcloud, and its app integrations, provide almost everything you need to opt out of big tech entirely." Not only do you get a private cloud storage server but a bunch of excellent apps for all purposes!"

@aetiology Absolutely right — advocating against safe, effective vaccines is advocating for earlier death, a shorter human lifespan, and — most horrifically — increased deaths of children. It is important to state this clearly and to repeat it as needed.

Vaccines are simply the most important scientific advance in biomedicine since 1900.

I wanted to tell you about a friend of mine's instance he recently re-launched here on the fediverse. He's a 3D artist. He wants to provide a home for 3D artists and their art where they are free to express their art without being censored, without having their art stolen for training by AI art generators, and more.

His instance is called 3dart.social and it's running Pixelfed.

If you are a 3D artist or you know someone looking for a home for their art and to network with other artists do check it out.

It's also LGBTQ friendly.

IOP Publishing’s networking event – sharing stories, building connections

This was on a IOP Publishing e-newsletter so sharing here as it may be of interest now that we have more people here from a science background.

The Commission should anticipate that Meta will meet the test of systematic non-compliance in DMA Article 18(3). In view of the seriousness of the circumstances, the Commission should be fully prepared to use its powers to impose structural remedies at the earliest opportunity.

There was a time when Big Tech benefitted from the gap between data protection and competition enforcement. That gap is narrowing. The two areas of law may become a vice.

Brands Town Update

The instance is flourishing, and nearly 100 signups have happened over the last few days. Lots of people are having fun, and we're settling into new methods and strategies to make this great for everyone.

One thing worth noting is that a few instances have already suspended us - Mastodon.social, one of the biggest instances, and a few others like wandering.shop. That is their perogative, and there are no hard feelings, but it is a bummer to see these efforts get misunderstood and closed off.

Brands.Town is one part culture-jamming, one part satire, and one part collaborative ARG with an evolving made-up world. Every account pretends to be verified. It's a giant middle finger to corporate propaganda on social networks, and an effort to make the fediverse somewhat less hospitable to actual brands trying to colonize our space.

Anyway, check us out: https://brands.town/public

And maybe sign up!

I will give big points to the first news organization, big or small, that:
* Sets up an instance for its newsroom,
* Sets up an instance for the community it serves,
* Enables rel=me for staff,
* Creates a boost-on-Mastodon sharing function,
* Enhances that function so headlines/images (with alt-text) appear in the toot,
* Covers the Fediverse as more than a geeky curiosity or alt-Twitter,
* Listens to and joins in the conversation here.
