Hello? Is this thing on?

SHARP (Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing) is on Mastodon! Apologies for any hiccups as we work on getting used to the platform.

In the meantime, we'd appreciate getting the word out so we can stay /get connected with folks interested in book history.

@adamdavidson

Adam is absolutely right. Journalism needs to take ownership (finally).

Journalists need to invest in the fediverse. The fediverse will help journalists thrive, and the fediverse will thrive because of journalists.

Nobody has the luxury of waiting. Universities, brands, companies, and journalists need to move to the fediverse now. Or get in line for your AOL keyword.

Allegedly #Musk lost the chef position at #Twitter via public poll verdict. (What a pathetic thing to do, btw.)

I'd have voted him to stay because the least thing we need is a Twitter-Zombie. Either it somehow works like pre-Musk or it's dead. Keeping Musk would have been a safe bet on Twitter's death, most likely getting the rest of the important accounts over to Mastodon.

Furthermore, he's still the owner. Any new top manager needs to do what Musk says. So this won't change much IMHO. 🤷

@ct_bergstrom Science education should include the realities of the peer review process for a pub and giving a presentation of one’s work at a professional conference with ample Q&A time. #PeerReview #science #academia

Are folks really pressuring independent artists, authors, etc., not to promote their work here?

Do you also picket your local independent cafe and mom and pop stores? What happens if you succeed in shutting them down? That’s right, you end up with a McDonald’s in their place.

Please learn to separate capitalists from folks trying to survive under capitalism. Independent people trying to pay their rent isn’t advertising, it’s existing. What Coca-Cola does is advertising.

@eniko @candyleader The people telling artists to "quit spamming" are the same ones telling #BlackMastodon they can "just block anyone you don't like".

Meanwhile I'm over here having to dm an artist I really liked because she didn't have a store anywhere I could find.

Hit me with those links, peeps! I can buy scented candles from local craftspeople any time, I want something different from artists in my timeline!

@gamingonlinux I, for one, absolutely want to see everybody’s cool shit.

@nextcloud I am really happy to have been given the chance to work on Nextcloud, a project that I dearly love and that I think is essential to claiming back our digital life. During these last 1.5 years, I have been involved on so many projects from performance and accessibility to the latest redesign and I am really graceful to all my colleagues who helped me and allowed me to grow so much.

There was some merit in saying "growth shouldn't be your goal" when the #fediverse was much smaller, but the way that's morphed into "don't self-promote and just be a person" is simply not how people use social media. Creators are the backbone of EVERY social network, and it must be the case that people can try to use their skills to make a living here.

It is, in fact, virtuous to try to escape the cycle of letting rich corps take your work. We should help those people, not push them away.

@zleap @niko first people, en mass, need to start questioning the viability and suitability of proprietary systems that they've been fed, which (they should have sufficient insight to see) are like Twitter. Having experienced the Fediverse, they see there's another way to do things. One would hope they'll start thinking... hmmm... maybe there's a similar parallel digital universe for everything else I do on a computer.

I’m just here to try to reach the geeky kids, maybe LGBTQIA, maybe alt, maybe on the spectrum, maybe just a little weird - and tell them that you can be 40 and have a Star Wars living room, and you can decide to not have kids and still have a life full of meaningful relationships and not regret it at all, and you can be a gamer and learn work skills from it, and you can be single but still do everything and travel the planet, you can be covered in tattoos and piercings and still be a successful business leader & public speaker, you can know trans rights are human rights and still be retired from the military, you can do whatever you want to as long as you show up every day and put in the work and put up a good fight - don’t like the people around you, society, your family, crappy friends, lousy spouses, what “they” told you, or the entropy of it all drag you down. Life can be really unfair, but learn your own personal battles, find your own family, and find meaning in the goofy world.

Time for a proper introduction. I'm a wildfire and climate change researcher who has somehow remained employed in academia for 6 years. I worked in government for almost 10 years before that. Before that I studied neuroscience and biochemistry, before that business and German. Public interest science. Outreach, industry engagement. Anything to deepen the links between science and society. Oh and reading, and basketball, and work-life balance, and frivolity.

Saw my students today for the first time in a week (was traveling last week). Did an opening circle activity to catch up with them. Gave them an opportunity to ask me a question, they could pick the topic. 3/4 of the questions were students asking about how I was and how I liked my trip, 1/4 about content.

This reinforces my belief that human connection is the magic in a classroom. Learning cannot happen without a classroom space infused with humanity.
