If this year taught us anything, it's that:

1) Workers keep America going, not billionaires.
2) Corporate profits don't trickle down to workers.
3) Poverty is a policy choice.
4) Health care is a human right.
5) Strikes work.

I hope we act on these lessons in the new year.

In a recent discussion on webcams ./ usb microscope resolution. Webcamoid was suggested, with a warning the output was disturbing.

I can see why

Can anyone explain what it is even doing here.

Rather brilliant from The Register on the constant nagging that makes up so much of the modern computing experience. Marred only slightly by their non-compliant cookie notice ;-)

I DON'T WANT SELF DRIVING CARS!!!!

✔️ I want boring things like public transit that comes so regularly I don't need to check a schedule.

✔️ I want fast passenger rail so accessible and easy it's preferable to suffering airports.

✔️ I want cities that aren't built around cars-as-default

✔️ I want the country to own it.

expect wobbly uptime on libreboot.org today, or at least the next few hours from now, 12:08 UK time, 1 January 2023:

I'm messing with routing tables, on the L2TP tunnel router that hosts libreboot.org

I'm experimenting with redundant internet for libreboot.org. I'm making it so that it reliably re-routes all traffic via another internet, when the main one goes down.

iproute2 is a bit fiddly

Fiction to look out for in 2023 - With new work from Richard Ford, Lorrie Moore and Zadie Smith, plus second novels by Caleb Azumah Nelson and Guy Gunaratne, this is shaping up to be a memorable 12 monthsNonfiction to look out for in 2023During the lockdown years, I kept reading articles by novelists saying how unproductive they were feeling, how virus narratives had colonised their subconscious... #theguardian

@zleap @nasa I came here to say this, but also 2023 is not a leap year.

As Croatia is joining the Eurozone, Liberapay is, for the first time, dropping support for a currency.

- The Croatian Kuna (HRK) has now disappeared from donation forms.
- All existing donations and scheduled payments in that currency have been converted to the Euro.
- All accounts which had the Kuna as their main currency have been switched to the Euro.

Congratulations to Croatia, and happy new year to everyone! 🥳

Libreboot homepage speaks French now.

Someone is working on translating Libreboot pages into French. More pages will be translated in due course.

Merci

@kushal that feeling when you click a button you coded for the first time can be pretty great 😊

I love closing out the year with this. 😊

On December 31, 1995, exactly 27 years ago today, legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson published his final 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strip.

How beautiful and appropriate it was, and a timeless reminder of what we have before us in 2023. ❤️

Happy New Year, ya'll!

Here’s wishing all of you on the Gregorian calendar a Happy New Year!

(And here’s to building a smaller, kinder, more human-scale world in 2023 and beyond.)

was watching the arrest video with a colleague from Romania, he confirmed that multiple specialist Police units had been watching him for months (and likely checking metadata from his devices).

Tate had been goading the Romanian authorities for some time, and even claiming they weren't capable of investigating serious crime and sexual offences. No EU country's government is going to tolerate stuff like that...

You see that thin line of light? That's the edge of the atmospheric skin surrounding our planet. All the climate occurs in that little collection of gases, and that's what we're flooding with greenhouse gas contaminants.

My grandmother lived through the Blitz and war profoundly affected her family.
She became a lifelong peace advocate and pro-European, believing integration made such wars less likely.
I wrote about her for our series marking Ireland's 50 years in the EU. irishtimes.com/life-style/peop

#introduction Hello I’ve just arrived on the @ACM mastodon instance. I’ve a strong interest in Computer Science education (member of SIGCSE), and in autonomous agents research - particularly modelling human behaviour. Originally from Melbourne, Australia; now based in Sheffield, UK. I was known as @CompSciEmma on the bird site, and also exist as @CompSciEmma - I will probably keep that as a more casual account.

Question/poll for people joining in the last couple of months. This is a question that effects both your account and experience here, and I am wondering if there is a knowledge gap. There's no right or wrong answer, it's only about what you currently know, right now.

The question- do you know and understand the concept of defederation *and* also do you know what to do if the instance you have your account on is defederated on a wide scale?

(feel free to boost, and I may boost responses also)
