There is a lack of social engagement, interest, about evidenced best ways to live sustainably.
There is a lack of social engagement regarding posts that speak out against air pollution.
There is a lot of #science publications that detail the problems caused by the ecologically unsustainable businesses & lifestyles.
There are many people that are living & supporting extremely unsustainable lifestyles, whilst not doing anything (much) to reduce CO2 emissions.
A friend asked me what I thought of the AI doomsday news
Essentially, I'm not that worried about AI. There is always an enormous gulf between the technology we *have* and what companies can do to actually roll it out in a way that's profitable
What I'm much more concerned about, I said, is how much personal info companies collect about individuals without any gov barriers. It's been roughly 15 yrs, & there's hardly any legislation. GDPR is a good step, but it's essentially the only law around

Never ever trust an Internet-connected camera. This example is Ring (owned by Amazon). A few months ago the Roomba camera was also proved to be uploading intimate video.
"A former employee of Amazon.com's Ring doorbell camera unit spied for months on female customers in 2017 with cameras placed in bedrooms and bathrooms, the Federal Trade Commission said in a court filing on Wednesday when it announced a $5.8 million settlement with the company over privacy violations."
"Amazon also agreed to pay $25 million to settle allegations it violated children's privacy rights when it failed to delete Alexa recordings at the request of parents and kept them longer than necessary, according to a court filing in federal court in Seattle that outlined a separate settlement."

AI: War crimes evidence erased by social media platforms

So opinions on #Mainstrem #SocialMedia and #AI to one side for the moment. This seems to be about #Objective and #CriticalThinking when it comes to #Moderation. What can we develop on the #Fediverse to balance usersafety with preservation of evidence, which in this context is #Evidence of #WarCrimes.
How should #SocialMedia deal with this in general

There's a mental health crisis in science.
Studies that collectively surveyed tens of thousands of researchers worldwide suggest that scientists’ mental-health struggles are a direct result of a toxic research culture.
41% of respondents reported moderate to severe anxiety and 39% had moderate to severe depression.
Those levels are six times greater than in the general population.
As always, it's exacerbated for members of under-represented groups which when it comes to science is pretty much everyone who's not a white man from a high-income country: women, non-binary individuals, people of colour, those from sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) and students on low incomes...also senior researchers and scientists in different countries.
