"Generative #AI does not have the wide array of use cases the industry tried to convince us it did, and it’s far too computationally intensive to be used for mundane tasks. But once the hype fades, there will surely be a greater push to make certain implementations more efficient so they can stick around, and there will undoubtedly be countless efforts to keep them running regardless of the social and environmental impacts they might have..."

Should we all hold hands and jump? Alan Rusbridger suggests a scenario in which "everyone" agrees to leave X on the same day. The date for this magnificent X-odus is November 5. Not for the fireworks but because it's the US election and we'll know whether the US has gone fascist.
He seems to have no conception that leaving X might actually be a step towards opposing fascism.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society asked for protection for medical teams and civilians Friday in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, emphasizing the need for freedom of movement across all Palestinian territories.
Dr. Younis Al-Khatib, the group’s president, made the appeal during a meeting with a joint British-French delegation led by the foreign ministers of both countries, David Lammy and Stéphane Séjourné.

This being the dailyfail to one side, the headline caught my eye as I only said on here the other day I suppose we will get dragged in to this.
"Israel says it expects Britain and US to join them in attacking Iran if Tehran carries out revenge strike for Hamas leader's assassination"

I would like to remind the british government that our fundamental BRITISH values are:
Democracy
The Rule of Law
Individual Liberty
Mutual Respect
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Therefore any action in support of this would to me be a breach of our own values, as we are supporting the Netenyahu government in mass murder, genocide, land theft and a host of other offenses, some of these are now the subject of ICC court action.
British diplomat Mark Smith resigns over UK arms sales to Israel - what a principled, brave decision.
“It is with sadness that I resign after a long career in the diplomatic service, however, I can no longer carry out my duties in the knowledge that this Department may be complicit in war crimes”

@zleap Found an infographic from the WHO on mpox from Dec 2023. It is quite busy but comprehensive. Maybe others have found something better. https://cdn.who.int/media/images/default-source/health-topics/monkeypox/mpox-what-we-know-infographic-thumb.jpg?sfvrsn=6849f684_5

I've been working on a few tools to improve the Moderation UI in Mastodon:
- Allow searching for reports from a given instance/user: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/31449
- Attempting to address the information flow on Report Details page: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/31444
For the second one, I'd really love to have a sit down with a UI/UX designer to see what we could do better in this page (there is a lot of data)
The space rock that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago was a rare strike from an asteroid beyond Jupiter, a new study details. The finding pins down the nature of the fateful space rock and its origin within our solar system, and may benefit technology that forecasts asteroid strikes on our planet, Live Science reports:

Dear parent… you didn’t just stumble into my studio. You sent your child to me and pay my not insignificant fee because you know I am one of the absolute best violin teachers in the area. Some students just show up, because look! Violin teacher! You researched and knew my track record with previous students.
Now why the HECK are you giving me push back when I tell you your child needs XYZ equipment?!?!?!? Who has the doctorate in violin pedagogy and decades of teaching experience? You or me???

I see a lot of virologists and other researchers very skeptical of some of the long COVID prevalence numbers.
But if someone can now handle 10-20% less brain work than they used to, that's a huge impact even if it's not being fully disabled. And it can be very tricky to capture with standard cognitive testing unless that person for some reason completed such testing pre-covid.
