@zleap I'm not sure the complexity (and therefore attack surface) of most VPNs is justifiable given the simple elegance (and time-tested reliability) of SSH... I think it's "easier" for unsavvy users... but it shifts the complexity to whoever's maintaining it.

While we're on the subject of free software birthdays: happy birthday to LibreOffice! It's one of the programs in regular use at the FSF.

I may just have created a monster... explained to my almost-teenage boy how port forwarding via SSH works...and told him that for most legitimate purposes it elegantly replaces the need for VPNs (kids only use the dodgy 'free' ones meaning they're lining themselves up for exploitation). People in the Windows world don't understand that VPNs are hitting a brass tack with an expensive and performance sapping sledgehammer.They accommodate the unnecessary complexity of Windows network architecture.

I LOVE the innovations on this Mastodon instance. It is truly inspiring, especially the group service you developed on groups.qoto.org!

I was wondering, I noticed that the domain public.group is around $2000 USD on Namecheap first year only, (a mere 13$/year after that !! !!) .

I personally would be willing to contribute 200 $ to the devs of Qoto to purchase that domain name and host a federated group service on it.

Having @mygroup@public.group as an available asset would be a huge service to the Fediverse! A dream come true!

Would anybody else be willing to contribute funds towards a fundraiser to make this happen?

Please let me know and I can set up a liberapay, get in contact with the owners to make this a reality!

Someone at a bar was telling me about their "metaphysical crystal" collection and I said "Oh I know a little about metaphysics, how do you mean?" and it turned out they didn't mean that kind of metaphysics at all.

Reminds me of when a friend and her mom played lectures on "quantum healing" for houseguests and it was complete pseudoscientific hogwash and anyway long story short I'm a lot more polite these days
