I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.
Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.
Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.
#introductions
I’m a Welsh #author in exile originally from #Cardiff and now living in #Hampshire. My novels are psychological #suspense published by Darkstroke Books. The most recent The Girl in the Van is shortlisted for the Pageturner book award. It opens in #Tenby and action moves between Wales and London. I’m keen to network with other authors and readers as I had a great community over on the other place.
Your Mastodon feed won't improve through passive engagement. There is no algorithm to suggest and share what you liked.
You must actively follow different people to see what they boost, and you must boost for other people to see. Some people are from different servers. You will see more of what they see organically. You can also hashtag to increase visibility.
There is no quote retweet either. You have to actively engage and comment in the thread.
BBC: Twitter users jump to Mastodon - but what is it?

"Mastodon is not one platform. It's not one "thing" and it is not owned by one person or firm. All of these different servers link together, and form a collective network, but they are owned by different people and organisations." #fedinews #bbc
Are you new to Mastodon?
Do you need some help? A simple guide to how Mastodon works?
Check out my website, it answers lots and lots of questions you might have:
It's written in non-technical language, and aimed at a general audience. If you're new here and feeling a bit lost, this is the site for you!
(There are also tips for advanced users in a separate section of the site.)
If you can't find the answers you want from the site, @ or message me 🙂
Just added the fixtures for the Football / Soccer world cup to my blog. Trying not to make a post every day, as that may just annoy followers. Hopefully between everyone here on #Mastodon we can create a dynamic conversation and boost interaction.

🌏 Introducing https://mapstodon.space, a new Mastodon instance for the mapping & geospatial community 🗺
Mapstodon is intended to be a gathering space for GIS, mapping, geospatial & cartography professionals and enthusiasts, regardless of the tools you use. Ask questions, share your maps, chat around, and above all - enjoy the mappiest custom emojis of the whole Fediverse!
👀
I've seen new Mastodon users compare the vibe of the Fediverse with the excitement and experimentation of the early days of the web.
If you missed those days or want to learn more I recommend The History of the Web project. It's available as a low-traffic newsletter:
https://thehistoryoftheweb.com
or blog:
https://thehistoryoftheweb.com/archives
Every issue delivers fascinating stories backed with solid research. I did live through those days, yet I discover a lot of events or projects I didn't know about.
Using the sun as a gravitational lens, a near-future telescope could get a 1300-pixel image of an Earth-sized planet 100 light-years away...and a 1-pixel image of an Earth-sized planet *100,000* light-years away.

#introduction - Hello - I'm new on the #fediverse but that didn't stop me from diving in head first. I stood up the fenetre.dev instance of #mastodon this afternoon. I'm a technologist, developer, and SRE-type working for corporate America.
I have a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology but I should have gone to school for computer science since that's what I do now - building CI/CD pipelines and writing tools in #golang. I love #photography, #vinyl and #coffee. Ask me anything.
Hello #fediverse, I'm back.
Sorry for leaving two months ago, I had to bite the bullet and shut down my own #friendica instance for various reasons: update problems (and thus security risk), removal of a feature I heavily relied on, and some bug I couldn't track town that prevented many mastodon users from following. :-/
Now trying hosted mastodon. Wish me luck.
TL;DR: The 'verse as a whole is a free speech platform, in that anyone can spin up an instance and use it to say whatever they want. But there are a wide range of tools designed to make sure nobody is forced to listen to them.
"How to host your own Fediverse instance?"
Vielleicht ist das ja für jemanden interessant. Neben den dort aufgezeigten Möglichkeiten, gibt es natürlich noch weitere.
