@zleap I guess it is about compleltely isolated network, so it is more about "communitcation between other subscribers of such local service within same local area the provider of local-only network covers", with eventual connection between other such local-centric providers.

"The discovery of bodies continued for a third consecutive day in #Karachi amidst an extreme hot weather, with 11 bodies...."

This is a "tip-of-the-iceberg" effect, most heat-caused deaths will never hv been recognised or recorded as weather related, they will be "natural causes" (heart attacks, strokes, renal failure, etc)

Un sketch de Garfield aurait-il inspiré le plan de communication du RN pour les #electionslegislatives2024 ?

One of the many great things about FOSS is my OS allows me to use my computer as I wish. I don't need an account with anyone, I can set up cloud storage if I wish or not. #Linux #FOSS #nextcloud
@BillySmith

@DrSuzanne It didn't take long, and her post is pretty hilarious in addition to being clear and helpful.

Worth it to read just for the entertainment value, tbh.

@DrSuzanne I wish I could quit too, but being self-employed makes it tricky.

This place is great, but I'm not certain I can develop a network to help with earning a living.

@BillySmith @zleap @1dalm @sundogplanets There have been previous attempts to provide sat internet in most parts of the world. I still have an INMARSAT BGAN terminal somewhere that had a pretty good bandwidth for the time (mid 2000s).

None of these solutions required a mega constellation. And in the end, the demand wasn't that great as mobile networks already covered all the more densely populated areas. For the other places, you don't need 50 k satellites.

Just as some people get to be "expats," while other people are "immigrants" or "migrants."

Just to some people trying to survive a disaster get to be "survivors looking for food," while other people are "looters stealing food."

Some voters get to be "undecided," worthy of our attempts to persuade them, and worthy of concessions on their key issues... while other voters are "stupid, low information, selfish, ignorant people," who should "have fun getting lynched when Trump is back in office."

@hannah oh my gosh, thank you so much!
I hoped that musing about it on Masto would have this result! 😭

Dunno about climate change, but I'd need to hunt down the paper about it, but apparently the metal particles are not good for the ozone layer.
And that their effect will show up with decades of lag. So there is that.

Worst part of updating my talk: looking up how fucking many more Starlink satellites there were than last time I gave a version of this talk. 200 more than a month ago. Fuck.

There are now 6,209 Starlinks in orbit, fully 62% of the 10,009 active satellites in orbit.

All of these "fully demisable" Starlinks are planned to burn up and deposit their metal in Earth's atmosphere. I just saw multiple 100-pound pieces of another SpaceX "fully demisable" rocket, so I'm sure it'll be just fine.

The# sun warms the Earth, making it #habitable for people and animals.

But that's not all it does, and it affects a much larger area of #space. The #heliosphere, the area of space influenced by the sun, is over a hundred times larger than the distance from the sun to the Earth.

Earth's atmosphere protects life on the planet from the effects of cosmic radiation, but the heliosphere itself acts as a cosmic shield from most interstellar radiation.

Regarding Slack's announcement* that they will be "reducing [their] data storage offering for the free version of Slack [and] deleting messages and files more than one year old from free workspaces", I don't know.

One thing I became much more aware of after I joined the fediverse over a year ago is the unsustainable "infinite growth" of our online spaces that we all got used to thanks to corporate social media.

True.
Also, we have always accepted refugees so they apply to come here because compared to some countries it was easier, then once established they move to the country of their first choice.
