This is a wild story that says a lot about right-wing evangelicalism:

1) Matt Bevin, the Republican former Kentucky governor, adopted a boy from Ethiopia for PR purposes
2) Bevin and his wife decided they don't like the boy so they ship him off to an abusive "troubled teen" facility in Jamaica
3) Jamaican government shuts down the horrible group
4) Bevin family abandoned the boy in Jamaica after the facility was closed

79 years ago today a nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, killing 135,000 people, mostly civilians.

3 days later Nagasaki was bombed, killing a further 80,000.

We must do everything we can to prevent an atrocity like this from happening again.

@eniko Sadly none of my other Linux machines have multiple drives, otherwise I'd do some testing. I don't want to delete/reinstall Kitsune on my main machine because I'm always terrified of losing my saves (Steam trust issues).

I'll boost this post to see if some of my Linux-using followers can help out!

That’s why there are no “legitimate concerns” behind the riots.

It is not only because they are clearly targeting British Muslims.
Their concerns against immigration are themselves racist too. Politicians making their careers off driving those concerns know it. #r4today

Rioters set up ‘race check point’ screening cars and only letting white drivers pass

This has got to be stopped immediately.

Please can someone confirm we are in 2024.

The daily fail issue from Saturday just gone has a spread that next week they are giving away a Premier league fixtures poster, This is for the MENS premier league fixtures. Do despite the popularity of womens soccer it is anoter kick in the teeth for fans and esp young fans who follow the WSL rather than the Premier league.

Someone has just suggested that we train soldiers to also deal with domestic public order matters with non-lethal force.

In other words: to train soldiers not to be soldiers.

It is presumably demanding enough to train soldiers to be soldiers.

Yes: some missions abroad involve peacekeeping, crowd control, etc; but that is not the same as domestic civil policing.

Policing is not the same as soldiering. And nor should it be.

yay

J P shared an update on Designate The English Defence League as a proscribed terrorist organisation Check it out and leave a comment:

Now reached 150,000 signatures

Just watching the Dom little wood program, where he is in the US trying out different jobs, today it is the police, they just shot him with a 50kv taser to demo what it is like, perhaps the UK police need this on a few of the terrorist thugs causing mahem at the moment.

The current trajectory is something like this:

- X is becoming more actively and explicitly a right-wing disinformation and hate platform every day: each new 'thing' is more brazen than the last

- It also remains widely and heavily relied upon by people, institutions etc

At last, the authorities are starting to call it by its proper name.

Terrorism.

#nofascism here thank you

I've worked as a waiter, a shelf stacker, in numerous offices, a postman, on a factory production line, a labourer on a building site, and as a a carer in an OAP home. All of them were a piece of piss in comparison to being a school teacher. You have no fucking idea, believe me.

I sincerely hope UK regulators and government hold Musk and his husk of a company to account.

AI is a scam on our environment

"Besides requiring huge quantities of fresh water to keep data centres cool, when powered by non-renewable energy sources, artificial intelligence also releases significant amounts of carbon emissions. Each individual use of genAI to answer a question or produce an image comes at an incredible cost to the planet; with the technology spreading at unprecedented pace around the world, its environmental footprint is only destined to increase."

Just watching BBC breakfast, the presenters keep asking if the prison system has the capacity to cope with the aftermath of the riots, the answer seems to be yes each time.

Does this not suggest reports it can't cope is based on either mis information or people simply not understanding something as to how the prison system works ( I am not an expert )

Labour want to release people early, I get the impression these people who they want to release are in due to less serious offenses, and could be deemed safe to release. This is different to some reports of people guilty of serious offenses (sexual offenses, assault etc)

The system does seem at breaking point, the Labour party are going to have to sanction recruitmet campaigns not just for sectors such as teaching and medicine but also mental health (as they want to put mental health professionals in all schools) but we also need probation services and support for prisoners post release.

There is litte point in releasing people from incarceration without providing the support for them to readjust

We need more people to build / renovate homes to help solve the housing crisis, they want GB energy that is going to require engineers to build and install infrastructure.

As for the issue of drugs and addiction, this is another issue we need MORE trained professionals to help solve.
