Recently I was invited to present on long term software development. I asked around for people's experiences here on Mastodon, and you delivered in spades! Please find here the collected wisdom in blog post form. Likely relevant for everyone shipping software that has to stay viable for a decade or more: berthub.eu/articles/posts/on-l

In 1983, asteroid 4147 Lennon was named in memory of John Lennon. A few years later, asteroids 4148 McCartney, 4149 Harrison, and 4150 Starr were named after the rest of the Beatles.

Good to see that @creativecommons quietly discontinued their X account in November, focusing instead on Mastodon and #Bluesky.

Looking forward to hearing about all the spite donations to Wikipedia that Musk just kicked off.

you know what would be a great christmas present?

a job

@zleap @petergleick I think we should be making at least a small donation to the Wikipedia foundation. I don’t believe that Musk can shut them down.

When it comes to free speech, as with many things, Elon Musk is a liar. He doesn’t want free speach. He wants the speech that favours him to be unfettered, and the speech that’s critical of him or his preferred narrative suppressed. He wants speech that he can control.

Meta’s ecosystem doesn’t foster communities; it farms users for data. Threads proves they’ve learned nothing after two decades.

Is it just me or is email federation slowly dying? I've encountered three different organizations this year which require me to have a GMail, Outlook or Yahoo email address in order to RECEIVE emails from them. What's going on?
