"capable of running custom-built open operating systems. "

"Software: Any open-source operating systems built on top of numerous RTOSes"

"InfiniTime (also known as JF's project, FreeRTOS firmware or Pinetime-JF) is an open source (GPLv3) firmware written in C++ and based on FreeRTOS, LVGL and NimBLE. "

Currently not running on a Linux kernel, but seems to be preluding implicate that it can if someone wants to port one out.

@lucifargundam hmmm I don't think so. An RTOS is very very different from something like linux or even MacOS or Windows. And just to clarify, PineTime does *not* run Linux or any Linux based OS as it stands. Additionally, the chip for the watch is an nRF52832 which is Arm Cortex-M based. This would make the theoretical "porting" very difficult and even if you were able to I don't see how that would be beneficial as the battery would die incredibly fast due to not having the sleep and realtime functionality of an RTOS given the low capacity battery it has.

Having said all of that, I'll let @lupyuen comment as he is most certainly the expert on this.

Unfortunately, it's just a misleading title in an otherwise reasonably accurate article. The PineTime definitely doesn't run Linux. Pine don't (as far as I know) claim that it does. That said, it is part of a larger Linux ecosystem, what with the PineBook Pro, PinePhone and PineTab etc. To an outsider, it may lead one down the garden path of assumption.

@tom - No, it's IPS, with a cradle for charging. I can get about 4-5 days off a single charge. Bright and clear display, though I would have liked either e-paper or OLED. Considering the price point, and it's already good battery life, I'm happy with it. :)

For sure. Pine is good stuff. I'd be happy with it too considering that there are no open source watches on the market, unless?
@tom I have the PineBook Pro; PinePhone and PineTime now, and I've not regretted any of those purchases. I am a tinkerer though, and there are definite issues with stability on them. That said, @PINE64 has an excellent community, welcoming and helpful. If you like to play around with these kinds of devices, and can live with the occasional re-flash or manual change to configs etc, then they're absolutely excellent fun for the nominal cost. @lucifargundam @lupyuen @zpartacoos

For sure. I'd like something that just works but I've made peace with android and iOS being a part of my devices as far as phones go. Stock and crypto companies aren't going to make apps for pine and pureOS and stuff. I'd like a PinePhone, PineTab, PineTime, PineCube. PineCube may be the perfect thing I need for some projects. DIY "Ring" and a bare essentials surveillance network in general.
@tom What apps are you looking for specifically? You can have crypto wallets on the PineBook & PinePhone, they are mainline Linux after all. Full desktop apps are available, they may just not be ready for a mobile form factor, in which case you will need to either decrease the scaling, or use a convergence dock and a Monitor/Keyboard. But a lot of good apps run, for example - Gimp, LibreOffice etc. May be worth a look, if for no other reason than the "fun" factor. Yeah, the PineCube does look like it could be fun. :)

@tom Could you use web-apps for those? Webapp-manager on Manjaro works pretty well.

Will have to try that however webull and robinhood's apps have things that the browser version wont. not deal breakers
@tom Understood. I wish you luck! Let me know if you want some help, as I have the devices, I can at least test things for you, to help make a more informed choice. :)
