Education is about changing humans. When our students leave our classrooms, we expect they can do things, see things, and think things they could not before the class. If our students leave with their abilities unchanged, then they (and we) have wasted their time and energy and money while there.

"Oh dear, you have a lot of... things."
The cyborg looked up. "The word is prosthetics."
"So much machinery. Don't you worry you will stop being human?"
"Oh, there is a line I will not cross."
"What line is that?"
"I will not question another person's humanity."

"Does sex make you impure?"
The nun of the God of Morals looked at the young person.
"Have you listened to followers of the Judging God?"
"Does it?"
"It can do."
"Oh."
"If you do it selfishly, coercively, falsely, or carelessly."
"They didn't mention that part."
"They never do."

I printed the sign out and stuck it up in the lab:
"You are already in the future"
Both cheesy and inspirational. Perfect for us doing temporal displacement research.
One morning I noticed someone had scribbled on it:
"Not today I'm not"
Look closely. Is that my handwriting?

The sigil was drawn, the summoning incanted. An incubus appeared, his perfect, naked form golden in the candlelight.
"How can I please you?" he asked.
"Stand like this."
He looked at the sketch.
"Looks weird."
"I know," said the artist. "Try to do it, so I can draw it right."

The sign over the door said "Refuge For The Broken". Warm light spilled out of the windows; there was a smell of a hearty stew in the chill autumn air.
He sighed and turned away.
A witch opened the door.
"You one of them who can't say they're broken?"
"Um..."
"You're welcome."

"One of the things I love about science fiction is how it inspires real inventions."
"Like what?"
"Star Trek Communicators inspired early mobile phones. The stasis pods we use for long-distance travel is another example."
"They had those in Star Trek?"
"No, in Pokémon."

I'm writing a grant proposal and I'm going to use for the first time.
I love the idea of increasing the openness, integrity, and reproducibility of scientific !

I had worked on in a past life, and my new project on literacy brought me back to my days. I'm beginning to think that the universe is trying to tell me something...

Research synthesis is just plain hard

But did you know there's a online #community that aims to make things easier and more accessible in R

Join us at the Evidence Synthesis & Meta-analysis in R Conference #ESMARConf2023

It's free but abstracts are due November 14th!

A colleague from SIB in Bern (CH) said this:

I'm using more and more #vscode for #rstats instead of the beloved #rstudio. Why? Because:

- I can have *multiple* R consoles
- Remote working is easy peasy lemon 🍋 squeezy
- There's a code linter while I type
- There's syntax highlighting *in the console* with radian
- Running code in a #docker 🐋 or #singularity container is like taking candy 🍭 from a baby 👶
- It has awesome #git integration

I'm getting ready to teach a short intro to R seminar at . I would love to hear some ideas about what to cover in a basic R lecture. Anyone?

Here is one of the publications from our study on the mental health of healthcare providers during the height of the pandemic.
TLDR They took a hard hit but are pretty resilient

Politics (labor/Ontario)

Ok so:

- Doug Ford makes teacher strikes illegal
- Teachers go on strike against law making teacher strikes illegal
- Technically illegal teachers strike successfully forces Doug Ford to re-legalize teachers strikes

LOL
