Finals week. Faculty are asking questions about final grades. Here are the facts:

1. courses with TAs/Readers: those grades are struck. You are not obligated to grade this work.

2. courses w/o TAs/Readers: you can withhold grades for these if you sympathy strike.

@RBReich Where do you stand on #FairUCNow? You are a former #Labor Secretary but your silence has been deafening. #UC #graduate #students, #postdocs, and #researchers deserve to know where you stand. It is not just about #rail #strike you should tweet or toot, but about the #strike in our own #university!

The @UCDavis @UCDavisCAES @UCDavisPlants Plant Breeding Center Retreat, which was scheduled for Dec. 12-13, has been postponed. As a member of the @UCPlantBreeding and an invited speaker, I was looking forward to this meeting after a two-year hiatus. But we could not have met in good conscience while there is a highly justified strike going on of #graduate students, #postdocs, and #researchers @universityofCalifornia #FairUCNow and #UCaADmin pressures #faculty to be #strikebreakers.

Are you a scab? No of course not, you support rs. And submitting grades would be replacing strikers' labor and undermining grad student arguments about the necessity of their work. But you also worry about the undue burden withholding grades has on some of your undergrads (international students, those about to graduate, etc). Find out how to submit partial grades for your most vulnerable students, and no grades for the rest. These can be amended once the the strike is over.

I still have lots of questions about unintended consequences of some of the changes being made, and those being asked for, but we must be honest with ourselves that grading on behalf of TAs or Readers, or changing our exams, is equivalent to undermining their strike and reducing their leverage.

So we're about "cultural evolution", but what do we mean by "culture"?
Andrew Buskell, Robin Nelson, Azita Chellappoo, @catracacultural, and Solene Boisard have formed an applied working group to tackle this question.
The "#Culture" concept is a tool used by scientists, policy makers and activists. But it is not defined or used in the same way across such groups. This creates risks to effective and ethical science or policy, and even more so to cultural rights, protections, and resources.

Dear @uofcalifornia, I have 250 students waiting for feedback on 800 pages of work already turned in the Friday before the strike. W/finals bearing down, *I'm physically unable to grade it all.* How will you make sure students keep financial aid when grades aren't in?

The TAs and GSRs can't live sustainably over the long haul on the wages they get paid in many of California's housing markets. Do better than 7% raise in year 1 and then below inflation raises the next three years.

Well, lets see if they care anymore if I expose this shit on twitter. If you have an account there feel free to show some support:

Last week, graduate students across the University of California campuses went on strike in response to the university’s unlawful bargaining practices and unfair wages. These pictures were taken on November 16, 2022 at UC Davis, where the strike continues.

7 teams risk nothing at all by wearing an arm band. 1 team risks jailtime or worse by refusing to sing their national anthem. Guess who is brave enough to protest. #OneLove #Iran

fairucnow.org/support/ Lots of support for UC strikers. symbols matter, but it's also rather cheap. glad not to have to make these decisions, but I wonder if profs cancelling final papers or changing exams to be easier to grade undermines the strikers efforts as it signals they are not necessary to providing a quality education.

Just to remind you all that we at all the #UniversityofCalifornia's campi are still on #UCStrike after yesterday's insulting economic proposal to our bargaining team. Let's go until we get a #FairUCNow!
