Depressing how little response I get to posts at birdsite. No wonder I never enjoyed it much there.

Here [mastodon home instance] in an hour I have more interaction than there in a day, at least. And the quality, no comparison.

Keep cool, 💓

@design_RG Same. Birdsite is really just a circlejerk for celebrities. Not to mention the vast majority of followers are bots. It has no value left for me.

@freemo there are some interesting media presences there, it would be nice to bridge them over here. Scientific American, The Economist, New Yorker, The Atlantic for me, all favourites.

Along with The Guardian, NY Times.

Can we have Botz ???

@design_RG @freemo When I get back to my computer I might make you some via bots.tinysubversions.com. There are probably some bots out there for you, though.

@realcaseyrollins
Thank you, Casey!!

Would love to learn too, maybe you can share your experience and pointers.

@freemo

@realcaseyrollins

Just signed up for all the ones on Tinysubs, and SciAm at the birdsite since it seems to have been in operation already, lots of toots.

Are yours tested and running already?

Will spread the word. 🙇

@freemo

@design_RG @freemo The Tinysubs one won't show any signs of life until they tweet, and sometimes it can take a few hours for their tweets to get tooted, but the bots should be running fine.

A lot of the bots I follow have been made in the same way and they work just fine.

@realcaseyrollins @freemo That is awesome.

I see it's a Python file, so you run it locally and enter the URL for the desired feed?

Maybe we could host the SciAm one here?

@design_RG @freemo Perhaps.

I'm experimenting with a bot now using IFTTT & an RSS feed, you should be able to do this same thing here.

Once I figure out how to get everything set up I'll make a post about it.

@design_RG @freemo I used to post all the bots when I made them under the hastag but I made so many that it became tiresome lol, and bots.tinysubversions had a massive data failure on October, I think, that made it lose all the accounts.

@realcaseyrollins
Oooh, that is a pain. When something breaks and you lose all that work.

I used to place all the images for my forum posts, web, etc in a free hosting site. Worked well, was fast.

And then, it wasn't. Disappeared overnight, and all these, hundreds of posts, had no more images on them.

Was called Very Simple Image Host, vsih.com was easy to remember and gave shorter image links.

Even imageshark screwed me and other users up too, when they decided to not serve images for whatever reason.

We need things that stay online, otherwise our publications are damage and no one wants to go back and re-edit them all.

@freemo

@realcaseyrollins @freemo vsih now has "This domain is for sale.
Please contact steve@amdo.com"

@design_RG @freemo

Ack. That sucks.

That's why I back up things I care about on web.archive.org.

@realcaseyrollins
Does it allow you to enter an URL and submit for archiving it? Have used the site but never added a new one.

@freemo

@design_RG @freemo

Yep!

Turns out it's easy as going to web.archive.org/save/[URL]

@realcaseyrollins @freemo

Let us know, maybe on your profile here, what you are active on and can share expertise, maybe what line of studies you are in.

I love collecting and organizing tid bits and presenting them in a nice format so people can grasp it easier.
