The whole Aunt Jemima thing seems a bit too far to me...
@freemo Frankly it would be better if they updated the depiction to reflect the real-life Jemima later in life, who went on to make millions of dollars off the product and earned her way out of slavery.
It would be a nice uplifting message praising an African-American success story and removing the negative stereotype of the current version, while retaining the original icon that is #AuntJemima
@realcaseyrollins
Considering it is just a picture of a black lady how could they do that in the photo (which seems to be little more than her portrait). Give her a gold chain and other bling? Lol
@freemo Haha I would change her clothes a bit to make them a bit more modern...then perhaps change the logo to give her some gray hair? That's all I can think of atm
@realcaseyrollins @freemo They could print that story on the back of the box/bottle. A lot of products have this kind of "founder" story printed on the back.
@realcaseyrollins
Works for me.
@freemo Also Uncle Ben. Additionally, is Claude Debussy in danger re 'Golliwogs Cakewalk'? My late Guyanese wife was black but given a golly by an aunt in the early 1930s as a toy which she loved. When I came out to Symi I brought it with me (I had to put a explanatory note in the luggage as I didn't want people pulling it apart looking for suspected cocaine!). I regard myself as an anti-racist and even woke, but there are difficult hermeneutical issues about interpreting the past. We need to learn from the past, not try to erase it. However, most of all we need to ensure that all people are treated equally in the present and in the future.
@freemo I think we will come out of this and people will start to reflect and regret that we have removed some items that on reflection should not have been removed without wider rational debate.
