As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.
Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.
Period.
Today is my first test of the reporting system. I found an antivax post on my feed, looked into that person’s posts, and immediately came across not only more antivax accounts but racism and anti-queer bigotry complete with some vile slurs. I reported a few accounts; time to see how those kinds of things are handled on #Mastodon and the applicable servers.

@Yoshi@toot.community @rferl @yoshi @rferl I’m an ADHD-addled American but I’m also a grump that hates those things. I do however, like most of my fellow #neurodivergents, have well-seared memories of what it’s like to be bullied, gaslit, and have our boundaries steamrolled, so my prediction based on what I’ve seen so far is that WE won’t be the ones to let #Ukraine down. Maybe look to the crowd that taught you ableist slurs are okay for the superficiality that you expect.
@vees oh, thank you. I’ll look into who to talk to for QOTO then.
All right, I’m getting used to many of #Mastodon ‘s quirks, but I’m still bummed about an unexpected feature: the lack of thumbnails when I or others post links. I don’t know why it matters so much, but I just have a complete disinclination to click on a bare url, I can’t really QT someone into my feed even if only to add context and hashtags, I can’t swipe from other social media sites without directing traffic to them, and sharing news stories looks like a feverish forum post.

@paul@dasmirnov.net The easiest and fastest path to peace is for Putin to declare victory and go home, but somehow that’s never what “pro-peace” accounts are talking about. That’d be why you end up getting labeled as defacto pro-Putin; enablers don’t have to *like* or approve of extortionists, and often don’t. I’ve also yet to find a pro-capitulation arguer who could articulate a coherent philosophy between their position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the Israeli-Palestinian one.

Christmas songs be like, "I am happy. It is snowing now. It is snowing and I am happy. Things never get better, every year is the same, but today I am happy. Nostalgia will keep me alive. Nostalgia will keep me safe. These are tears of joy. This is healthy. Everything is fine."

@JohnGritt I mean, yes, wouldn’t actually argue with that, but critiquing a meme for its necessarily very short summary of what’s much more fully spelled out in the bill is such a poor example of that point that it’s not making a good case for your literacy, either.
@JohnGritt concept conflation is often used to obscure wishful thinking. In this case, truly lowering the “cost,” —since the actual production cost of synthetic insulin is relatively de minimus here— would involve in turn tackling more complex issues like IP reform and lowering entry barriers for true competition. But with widespread insulin rationing among diabetics leading to a steady trickle of deaths, short term as well as long term fixes are called for.
@JohnGritt “cost” more closely mirrors the language in the bill, which focuses on insurance deductibles and cost-sharing rather than retail price. Where no single word is comprehensively accurate, reflecting the source language is one way to avoid introducing an additional layer of imprecision. The meme prominently cites the original bill for a full analysis.
That being said, you’re right. Words matter, and accurate concepts matter, particularly in governance, where 1/2
