Every time I criticise some centralised platform – this time it was Substack – there are lots of replies about how it's the "only way for people to make a living".
I cannot describe to you how terrified I would be if my income depended on Substack.
It is the latest in a long line of centralised platforms that will lock you in and then change the rules to your severe detriment – and their profit.
If you build your livelihood on a platform like Substack then you are in for a very sad time.
@thor the economy of scale is a blessing and a curse
@LouisIngenthron @lucifargundam @fluffy @Archivist oh, makes sense, I forgot these are pretty popular there.
@LouisIngenthron @lucifargundam @fluffy @Archivist every time a major tornado happens I see a lot of footage with entire neighbourhoods of american homes disintegrating completely, with no brick walls in sight. Similarly with footage of out of control cars flying through multiple walls like they were nothing.
@lucifargundam @fluffy @Archivist @LouisIngenthron that's true, in regions where disasters of that scale happen and everything will get wrecked anyway you might as well build from the cheaper material. But that's not the entire US. Also when it comes to tornadoes and hurricanes, all but the biggest usually rip the roof off and leave the rest of the brick building mostly intact, unlike with cardboard homes which just entirely become a part of the weather.
@lucifargundam @fluffy @Archivist @LouisIngenthron
Forgive me for not trusting american resources written by people directly benefiting from drywall's need for replacing, but last time I checked brick walls didn't require nearly as much building/repairing since they generally stay where they're built, being solid and all.
Tests that fail semiannually? Why not!
Babel's test suite starts failing every half a year as DST starts or ends, and the format string for "detached" times changes.
@mgorny I think it's paradoxically so simple to use that people forget it has "more advanced" functionality.
Is the microwave oven really that hard to use? I mean, it takes a little practice but once you figure out the basics, it just works.
So why do most people still assume the only way to use it is to put random food inside and run it at full power until the food near vaporizes, and then never ever clean it up afterwards?
