@thor When you mentioned switches, do mean server switches?
I understand the feeling about programming for a living. It will cause burn out. There's a reason why I hate C++ and it's because I was forced to program with it. I loved C++ before this.
@thor You were a Software Developer previously and you've been involved with Maker Culture for many years right?
@thor I'm fairly certain that they could be convinced to see the mutually beneficial effects of such an arrangement. If not maintenance, perhaps they would consider someone with a background in tech for another position.
@freemo HP Pavilion 17-e119wm is the model and it was made in 2013. I hate most things about the laptop but it has a ZIF CPU socket and I could potentially swap the CPU.
I removed the plastic around the exhaust vent and removed the optical drive so I can get air from the other side as the vents on the bottom aren't sufficient. Thermal paste is Artic Silver 5 because of proven performance and science. I can hold full 3.5GHz clock at 100% utilization for hours without issue. It might reach 70C on the CPU during such workloads.
@freemo If you are trying to not say something bad about the OEM, I had to send it in for repairs in less than 2 weeks of buying it. HP is for Unix, servers, printers and calculators.
@freemo HP Pavilion something, it's a desktop replacement form factor. It has an AMD A10 5750m CPU, more ram than the system is allegedly capable of, chassis mods for better thermals and performance.
I'm proud of it and the 8 years of heavy use.
@lupyuen As a Mathematician, the first thing I thought of was thermal expansion coefficients and this being a good example. The moments when one realizes that they are a walking stereotype of STEM.

@freemo I'm using a laptop with a removable battery and processor slot.
@freemo 3 weeks in 2 days. Sounds like you need a new Panasonic Toughbook with all the options. Hot swapping batteries, communication in a warzone and ability to be used as a weapon. The world's only true all in one laptop.
I loved mine and throwing it down stairs when people asked what kind of laptop it was.
@thendrix It's a rich culture of trespassing and running from police. Sidewalk surfers in the urban jungle. Having to escape from police with a broken bone isn't rare. I've spent my share of time in the back of a police car.
It might seem foreign but it's all about having a good time. The culture is continually changing but it's very accepting. The older skaters are usually well respected and will teach the inexperienced without needing to be asked. I've never been a part of a community that was as accepting as skateboarding.
It really makes me think how trashy STEAM Culture has grown to try to be inclusive but fail miserably at it. The culture chases off people who would be interested and is prejudiced against the people who made it.
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
@thor Hoezo? Hakken hakken hakken.
@thor Perhaps you could work for the owner to pay the rent. It's not difficult to do most maintenance work and it's rewarding to fix things.
@thendrix (Dexter from The Offspring got a Ph.D for research on HIV.)
Don't wanna be an American Idiot. Don't want to understand that the case was pushed to the state level. Don't want to think how this could lead to more rights in some states.
@thor Maker Spaces or 2600 THQ gatherings.
@thor Are you saying that China is a Representative Democracy like the USA? It seems to be.
@thor I once asked a Freemason of considerable influence if they could do masonry. They said no and laughed.
Toughbook fan, Mathematician and Locksmith with limited success in other areas.
Political stance is far right and far left. Proponent of First Aid Kits and PPE. Easily disheartened by big tech. Partially hinged personality and stubborn enough to not write this in the First Person.
Distrust of Psychology and a fan of satire. I love a good joke and contradict myself. Somewhat serious but easily distracted.
