@DrSuzanne I giggle every time but it makes sense, it's a mastodon. 🦣
#introduction #NeuroscienceMigration
I am a neuroscientist with the CNRS in Paris, France. In the lab we use 2-photon imaging and neuropixel recordings with simple animal behavior paradigms (e.g. https://bit.ly/3GmXWeX ) to investigate how networks of neurons in the cerebellum and the motor cortex collaborate to overcome sensorimotor perturbations.
If you'll be in San Diego for SFN, you can swing by our poster: https://www.abstractsonline.com/pp8/#!/10619/presentation/70225
You cannot run an arbitrary search on Mastodon — in plain English: you cannot search for a specific expression in toots
Why? It's because allowing it would open the gate of harassment. It's not a bug, it's a conscious design decision.
How to find content then? Use hashtags instead! Including in your own toots — to make them easily discoverable. You can also browse the local and federated timelines.
My editor at WIRED asked me to write a guide to getting started on Mastodon and I really want to get it right. What are some resources I should read to make sure I don't betray the wonderful culture here? #twittermigration #mastadonmigration #fediverse
@meganlynch I am still very new, but so far I have seen a lot of warm vibes in the qoto server. I would guess all of the community moderation in play on most instances makes people behave a bit better here than on twitter.

I used to study the neuroscience of animal behavior in academia

now I work on building a neural interface at Meta Reality Labs

I've also been accused of studying punctuation

If you're going to post about sensitive subjects please use a CW (Content warning) feature. So people have the choice of seeing it.
Additionally, please do not use an asterisk (*) in words to censor them to evade text search. Mastodon doesn't have a search for text in toots and it messes with filters people have in place.
Thank you!
New user here. Had been considering the change for a while, took the plunge with the rest of the refugees of the #TwitterMigration. Lurked for a few days before posting.
I mostly used the birdsite for learning, #medtwitter was something I think worked rather well.
That said... By comparing with my (admittedly small, but fresh) home feed here at #Mastodon, during these past few days I have come to realize just how much the birdsite's algorithms were keeping me within rather limited boundaries, even if my tastes and interests have always been the same. #Mastodon has been giving me less noise and more content.
I am hopeful that this new experience might expand my cultural horizons through all of your wonderful collective and collaborative input and feedback!
Thank you to the creators and team behind #mastodon and to the maintainers of this server @freemo !
@bmatb Hi! I'm a #queer #nonbinary #scientist who works on #hearing and #audiology research. I am loving this #TwitterMigration and enjoying learning the new culture and norms here.
If you follow, I promise info about #ear stuff (#hearingaids, #hearingloss, #cochlearimplants) and #neuroscience tidbits generally. Also #weird stuff, #cats, #games, #gender, #portland, #mentalHealth, #glutenFree, #cognition, #philosophy, #linguistics, #programming, #gamedev, #disability, and #work
@bmatb Hi there! I'm a queer MD/PhD student studying neuroscience, but I also study LGBTQIA+ inclusion in medical school curricula. I'm striving to push medical schools for better representation of our community in patient cases and basic science courses. As it is now, LGBTQIA+ health is treated like a niche separated from basic science... and I hate that.
Hello #ScienceMastodon et al!
I'm a scientist who researches how ions cross cell membranes. I study ion pumps, exchangers and channels which are all amazing nanomachines. My lab is at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland (US).
I also direct a PhD training program in Cellular & Molecular Medicine so my hands are full with all things relating to grad ed.
Expect prolific #foodposting and pix of my handsome #AustralianShepherd Samwise.
So I just saw a professor of general chemistry post a student's exam (handwriting, math, and all) on Twitter to mock it as a bad exam and I think it's a prime example of a bad professor. If someone posted something like that here on mastodon, I imagine they'd have a hard time finding a STEM instance that would want them... #TwitterMigration
A fascinating phenomenon related to building a local online culture like mastoson: I lead a guild in #WorldOfWarcraft and sometimes to fill your group appropriately you need to open your parties/raids to random people across the world. WoW can be an incredibly toxic place (you would be surprised what grown adults act like behind a cute elf avatar), but my guild exists solely to counter that. I set things up so that before people are let into the Discord (for coordination on boss fights) they have to pause, read, and agree to a simple rule, rule #1: don't be an asshole. (Or else Britt will kick you out immediately). There are other rules, but that is the most important one.
At first I thought it wouldn't do anything to temper the toxicity, but it really has largely prevented people from behaving badly! Over the past year we've cultivated a group that is diverse and, more importantly, feels safe hanging out in our little chunk of this video game. People stick around and they consistently come back. Our guild has far more women and LGBTQIA+ people feeling safe to use voice chat than I've ever seen in WoW.
I think this clearly established community standard is present in many mastodon servers and I think it too will prevent many people from behaving badly. I'm very hopeful about this place even though I don't know quite how to use it yet!

A Raspberry Pi in my window takes a picture of the feeder every 30s and sends it to a Fast.ai model hosted on AWS Lambda. When the model says there's a squirrel, the Pi activates a solenoid hooked up to a garden hose, pre-aimed at the feeder.
Last year, we moved to a new house. I set up my birdfeeder in the backyard. But squirrels kept eating the birdseed!
What's worse, Home Depot didn't have any baffles.
So I took the obvious next step to defend the feeder. I built an AI-powered robot armed with a garden hose.
@c_constan I want to pet him. Those eyes are full of wonder!
My #introduction is overdue. I’m a professor at Penn who studies memory using systems and computational approaches. I’m also writing a book: When it comes to understanding the brain, what are we trying to achieve? What’s our plan to get there? What challenges do we face? #neuroscience #author
Writing has deepened my appreciation for community-based progress. I’m excited to be on this inclusive platform where we can leverage collective intelligence, and work through conceptual blocks together.
Extremely stubborn MD/PhD student investigating pain and memory. I'm in my third year of a seven-year-long Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson pursuing my PhD in #neuroscience.
