I wrote a thing for The Conversation about the potential for a #TwitterMigration based on our past research. Including a little bit about #Mastodon though I have a lot more thoughts than are in this piece. :) https://theconversation.com/mass-migration-from-twitter-is-likely-to-be-an-uphill-battle-just-ask-ex-tumblr-users-193677

reasons mastodon's "viral dampening effect" is a good thing:
👉🏻 no "main character of the day"
👉🏻 no free text searching for people to get angry at (and harrass)
👉🏻 doomscrolling is *actually bad for you* and not a thing we should be trying to replicate
👉🏻 birdsite's virality is heavily driven by actual paid advertising and bots. You think that "Explore" tab gets its content organically? really? That's not making connections between people, it's about driving sales.
Mastodon is not, and should not be, a 1:1 replacement for Twitter. But it *can* be a new place for you to make valuable connections with other human beings. #twitter #twittermigration
Ok, Mastadon is officially a lot more awesome than I had realised. There's a federated server for everyone who's really into bitcoin, and, yes, it is full of people who are as awful as you can imagine. But, with one click, you can block the entire domain! 12.8k thousand crypto weirdos filtered out in a click. Amazing.
@marielgm Not discrediting your observations regarding access to knowledge circles as it's likely because I didn't have a Twitter account for very long, but my overall experience seems to inversed.
Joining mastadon relative to the bird site I feel like I'm not being pushed hot takes, viral messages, and controversy just for the clout of the authors or businesses. It was actually difficult to find authoritative content without always hunting for blue check marks.
I do however agree that there is a large loss for the bird site in the critical areas you mentioned, hopefully those people impacted can continue to contribute to society in a meaningful way - I have no doubt they will.
Finding all of these professionals, hobbyist, and people who love to geek out on their passions is really pumping the serotonin at maximum levels all through this aging brain.
I just want to read everything and anything that excites some of you.
The people behind the Intercept remain huge big mad that I wrote this. They're now making shit up about me and trashing this article. What they have *not* done is corrected any of the errors in the piece. I'm used to reporting pieces people dislike. I'm used to people attacking my reporting. But this is above and beyond. Never seen anything to this level. https://www.techdirt.com/2022/11/02/bullshit-reporting-the-intercepts-story-about-government-policing-disinfo-is-absolute-garbage/
Elon fired the entire accessibility engineering team from Twitter https://twitter.com/gerardkcohen/status/1588584459779321857
I spent some time composing some music and sounds for a mobile crossword game I have out.
Would love to hear any feedback from anyone who likes crossword puzzles!

@jerlich I tend to not trust leadership of any company blindly.
I can't help but see this as a very expensive way to impact midterms here in the U.S., as well as future elections locally and abroad. Just to ensure the people can never create another Arab spring.
Maybe that's our fault for allowing the centralizing of discourse into just a few spaces online.

Twitter sued for Mass Layoffs without enough notice
Mastodon reminds me of why I used to like social media back in my early blogging days on the ScienceBlogs network.
Forums weren't intended to inspire outrage or spread disinformation.
We jumped in because we were genuinely excited to share things we were passionate about, build community & share ideas.
I'm super excited that, so far, #Mastodon has a similar feel of goodwill & enthusiasm. #TwitterMigration
Might as well jump in and do my #introduction.
I am a husband, son, and dog/god father who lives in the Pacific Northwest.
My background originally had me working as a grey hat scouring vulnerabilities while I worked on my schooling in Computer Engineering.
That background intersected with mobile operating system development as well as subsequent telephony/modem work. (Spent too many hours reverse engineering CDMA modem communication)
Afterwards I worked on the aftermarket Android OS, CyanogenMod(now known as LineageOS), as an open source contributor helping put up to date Android on things like the Nook Color, the HP Touchpad, and numerous mobile phones.
After the company and project took off, I joined as a paid staff frameworks engineering lead, helping ship the original OnePlus One mobile phone and a ton of devices that sadly never saw the light of day.
These days I work @ Android helping create great experiences within the the multitudes of surfaces it runs on now and the billions of users it impacts.
Aside from that I like to bike, play with my soldering iron, create and publish mobile apps and games, and learn about mental health - specifically focusing on how I can help my family deal with being war refugees who escaped a genocide.
I'm looking forward to learning from everyone in a less toxic environment - hopefully I can contribute something as well.

Have you packed your bags and relocated here from Twitter? You might be interested in reading this paper about what happens when communities migrate across platforms. :) https://cmci.colorado.edu/~cafi5706/CSCW2020_MovingAcrossLands.pdf #twittermigration
@acjay I definitely think (maybe hope?) the vibe will influence more restrained people to come out of the woodwork.
Those who feel like their words can't travel as far or influence as many people. Their thoughts matter just as much as those that can be controversial.
Really very pleasant to read through the content here and not just see a bunch of promoted hot takes and people trying to dunk on each other.
Engagement, need of growth and the greed that backs it makes all discourse vapid and toxic.
Software Engineer by trade. Tinkerer by necessity.
PNW. UNL. Staff Eng - Android @ Google.
Former alien as documented by the government.
Worked on #CyanogenMod as an embedded hacker (now #LineageOS).
Views are my own. Interested in #Android, #Flutter, #NLP, #Accessibility and anything I can take a soldering iron to.
