Sorry -- I needed to retract my earlier comment about the absence of COVID studies and the college dorm study being the main one; I had gotten something mixed up with the earlier version of the report (2020)

@dankennedy_nu The reporting on this meta-analysis is absurdly sloppy. For instance, Tayag's article in the Atlantic says that it incorporated data from 78 masking studies. It only used 17 masking studies of masking (the bulk focused on hand-washing). This information is in the abstract of the Cochrane article -- which Tayag apparently did not read.

@Moon @feld They are people we should have our eyes on next time there is a coup/secession attempt. Likewise for anyone saying that Kamala Harris is not a citizen (e.g. as asserted by Trump lawyer Eastman)

I was heartened yesterday that the Supreme Court is grasping for a more sophisticated vocabulary for how recommendation algorithms work. We’re overdue for a thoughtful reckoning about the interplay between algorithmic ranking and the surges of user activity it purports to measure, and how that interplay shapes the public sphere. But the question for the Supreme Court isn’t that; it’s whether a key division of responsibility enshrined in Section 230 should persist. Some thoughts… [1/22]

@Pat Ironic to mute someone for the offense of not shoving their opinion in your face.

@Pat @admitsWrongIfProven My understanding is that Qoto is focused on science and technology, not electoral politics. I know that using CW may result in fewer people reading what I post. If you find it tedious to expand the CW, there's an option to do so automatically.

The FTC has started a new Office of Technology! Now they're hiring technologists to power their investigations: ftc.gov/technologists

* Remote work possible.
* Pay is amazing by non-tech-sector standards (up to $176K).
* Blessedly simple application process.

Get in there!

Made a clock that shows the wrong time when it detects someone looking at it 👀🙂

@admitsWrongIfProven @Pat The only thing that is a bigger waste of time than politicians are people who get offended when they can't dictate every aspect of culture. They can go back to crying over changes to children's books.

@admitsWrongIfProven @Pat Commenting on the actions of elected officials is largely a waste of time, but sometimes I feel compelled to do so. Out of respect for the people who don't want to get dragged into that nonsense and scroll past long, irrelevant rants (especially those outside of the US), I put a content wrapper around posts about US politics with a succinct subject line.

USA politics -- MTG is not 'just asking questions'

MTG and her allies will present this "National Divorce" idea as a sincere attempt to find solutions to problems in the US. But MTG's never wanted any solution that allowed us to live together -- her entire career has been built on divisiveness. Maybe we should be happy that she maybe giving up on imposing her supremacist plan on the whole country, but don't be fooled that she is doing anything more than trying to create a sense of crisis that her faction can exploit. Anyone who takes her serious is either a total fool or in league with her plans.

USA politics -- secession when convenient for supremacists

The people of Atlanta don't want to be part of MTG's neo-Confederacy. The supremacists love to talk about "local control" -- but only when it pushes power to institutions that they control. They want Buckhead to secede from Atlanta; they want Georgia to secede from the USA; but what would they say to Atlanta and other areas seceding from GA?

USA politics - stupid ideas from wannabe tyrants

The politicians (MTG) and pundits talking about a 'National Divorce' have never considered serious ideas to address their stated concerns, such as 'democratic confederalism'. Instead, they are just trying to get people riled up and possibly identify/establish a polity where they can have uncontested control.

I recently discovered this divide between chemistry and astronomy and had to make the meme.

@Pat "in the US for awhile now" If you don't consider the 2010s to be 'democratic' then the US was never democratic. Political elites (alongside economic elites) have always manipulated the system to limit their accountability to the general public.

Done. The first male #penis I have ever posted and ever wanted to see on the internet. 😶

Something I've learned as a InfoSec practitioner, with a passion for industrial physical incidents:
It's actually pretty rare an incident is truly novel or unanticipated. The rub is managing risk and getting it addressed by management and culture.
That's the _hard_ part. And it is absolutely valid.

Yet another sign that the footprint of the death penalty is shrinking. I thank Gov. Shapiro of Pennsylvania.

Here’s the first part of his statement today:

Today, I'm announcing I will not issue any execution warrants during my term as Governor.

When one comes to my desk, I will sign a reprieve every time — and I’m asking the General Assembly to send me a bill abolishing the death penalty in Pennsylvania once and for all…
