@briankrebs Apparently, I don't understand 56% of you all
It's Friday, I have the day off, the weather is gorgeous in #Minnesota, and I need some fresh ideas on what to do.
@AriCohn I need to hear more about mining sapphires in Montana. Is this a destination vacation I can plan for my rockhounding SO?
Fifteen years ago, a couple of MIT students planned to give a talk at Defcon about a vulnerability in the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority's (MBTA) subway fare system. It was entitled Free Subway Rides For Life. The MBTA sued the students, and got a restraining order, canceling the talk and preventing the students from communicating truthful information to the public. I represented them (along with other EFF attorneys).
Fast forward to now. Two high school students have replicated the vuln, extended the research and gave a talk at Defcon this year. No, MTBA didn't bother to fix the problem.... BUUUT they did refrain from suing the researchers this time. And they even invited the students to HQ to give a presentation about their research.
I love this story and these students and am proud to have been a part of this history, and even more pleased that authorities have learned a lesson about appreciating hackers and the important work that you do.

@freemo @Gaythia My point though is that if we aren't pushing kids hard today in your opinion, education in my generation was remedial, and before that it was more like daycare.
A lot is asked of kids today, not the least of which is education. Humans are already living longer than most generations before them, and I'm starting to think kids need more time to be kids before we shift the weight of the world onto their shoulders. They'll easily have a half century of work ahead of them unless something drastic changes.
@Gaythia @freemo Folks say this, then I look at what my sons were being asked to do in first grade and it blows my mind. They are learning math I know was part of my 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum. But even more, they are doing it while still finding time in the day for music, art, and other "untestable" subjects
Looking for #gaming recommendations on the #PC. My faves of late have been #Satisfactory and #OxygenNotIncluded. #DiabloIV has been a nice distraction, but it hasn't grabbed on to me.
It can be AAA or indie, and the distribution can be whatever platform.
What say you, internet?
Can someone remind Canada that this is not what we mean by a purple state? #AQI #AirQualityAlert #mnwx
@freemo I get that's the intent, but when I think of likely and unlikely scenarios, a handgun doesn't seem to be the best tool for the job. Within my own home, I would be concerned that missed shots would penetrate walls and endanger bystanders. I've always thought the hunting shotgun with buckshot would have better stopping power, both literally and in terms of causing the assailant to reconsider their actions.
Outside my home, I can't think of many scenarios where I would have the time and the ability to pull a concealed handgun where it wouldn't immediately escalate the situation. Someone with a knife is likely already close enough to me to cause harm before I could pull, aim, and fire
@freemo it looks nice, but I still have trouble determining the actual utility of a handgun right now. They are fun to fire at the range, tho
@chuckwendig I dare, sir.
I dare.
@TonyYarusso @SwiftOnSecurity @TacticalGrace_ @nazgul Yeah, that's true.
Getting a summer dock on a lake nearby is stupid expensive...
@nazgul @TonyYarusso @TacticalGrace_ @SwiftOnSecurity The problem with Minnesota lakes is they freeze, so you still need a place to store one for 5 months a year (said by a guy starting at his 14' boat in the backyard)
@chuckwendig Can't say no to the nostalgic favorite of Peppermint Bon Bon from Kemps
