RSS fans!

You can follow any Mastodon account via RSS by just adding ".rss" to the end of the account's public profile URL.

To find a user's public profile URL, click on their profile image within Mastodon.

For example, if you click on FediTips' profile image you get this page in a new tab:

mstdn.social/@feditips

So, to follow FediTips through RSS, use this address:

mstdn.social/@feditips.rss

This will only show that account's public posts. Other posts will not be visible on the RSS feed.

Interwoven into instruction, assessment has many benefits. Its biggest benefit? Aiding students and teachers in closing the learning gap. Here are some thoughts and a list of digital tools. blog.tcea.org/digital-tools-fo #Education #EduTooters @edutooters

Good morning everyone! Today is #mastodonderdag this is a Dutch name for Masto Thursday. On this day lists are made with recommendations of people to follow.
Here's my list.

@amanda (Dutch weather photographer) @brena (photographer from NZ who loves hiking)
@gsichtskropfen (Fineart and Landscape photographer)
@geertje_geertsma( If you like photos and information about mushrooms this is the place)
@uk_csi (Droneshots from the UK)
@dronepics (Droneshots from Wales)

A boost is appreciated ❤️

If you download your Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a Python script to convert a Twitter archive to markdown or other formats: github.com/timhutton/twitter-a

Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.

@MrsDi there are two extensions I would recommend:

1. uBlock origin (chrome.google.com/webstore/det) this will speed up most websites because it blocks mainly ads also including YouTube ads.
2. SponsorBlock for YouTube (chrome.google.com/webstore/det) this will skip most sponsors. If you find one not being skipped, you can help by recording the sponsor, so that the next person can skip it. (Of course I understand this won't able to be done during class, though maybe can be done prior to class.)

It's time for your evening read, friends.

Mastodon and the fediverse have existed for years. For those who were here long before it's popularity skyrocketed, it's been a mix of emotions watching it grow.

This is a really enlightening read and the best thing I read all day. Please take a moment to give it a read yourself.

Home invasion: Mastodon's Eternal September begins

How do you celebrate your #EdTech support person in your building? Did you know that this year, December 7 is Ed Tech Appreciation Day? Observed in early December, the day is designed to celebrate the professionals who support the use of technology within a school district. #EduTooter #Education @edutooters

Today is the next fediverse workshop for beginners.

Nov. 9th 16:00 UTC

You'll find the link to the call here joinfediverse.wiki/Beginners_F about one hour before the workshop.

@fediworkshop

Please :boost: so many people who are new here will see this post and join the workshop.

@Herring1967 I found this explanation very useful when I got here a few days ago.

I wish I could remember who boosted it, so I could thank them again.

Project Zero's Thinking Routine Toolbox
--> 'A thinking routine is a set of questions or a brief sequence of steps used to scaffold and support student thinking. PZ researchers designed thinking routines to deepen students’ thinking and to help make that thinking “visible.” '

As you settle into Mastodon, be sure to learn the lingo:
- "toot": a tweet
- "tusking": starting a pointless fight with another user
- "woolly": going viral, as in "wow, that toot really went woolly"
- "extinction event": when a whole instance goes down

OpenStax - Free and flexible textbooks and resources.
Geared towards college level but there are a number of high school resources worth exploring.
Test banks, answer guides, slide decks, Google Forms quizzes, PDFs - the resources are extensive

I’m seeing long-time Mastodon folks asking people to please PLEASE use CW on posts about political topics and then I’m seeing almost no one actually do that. It’s so important to keep up with the culture of this space that was established long before many of us got here. Just use the CW!!

Metaphors of Edtech

If you are interested in the why of education technology as well as the how, take a look at Metaphors of Edtech, read.aupress.ca/projects/metap. I especially liked “Education is broken” and “Uber for Education”

Really important thing you need to know about Mastodon: You don't need to use the official app!

There are some good third party apps listed on Mastodon's own site:

➡️ joinmastodon.org/apps

The third party apps have more features and had way more development time.

:android: Android users might want to start with Tusky and Fedilab

:apple_inc: iPhone/iPad users might want to read this: transponderings.blog/2022/05/2

Mastodon is an open platform, so third party apps can use its features fully.
