@brndnpink @edutooters Avoid lecture longer than 10 minutes w/out having students discuss questions/insights in partners/small groups or apply new learning. Think of it as finding ways to move what you've just discussed with them into long term memory.

A call for help from my Mastodon friends:

I work at the intersection of #CognitivePsychology, #neuroscience, and #education: a field often called #MindBrainEducation.

So far, I've found folks in each of those disciplines, and am learning a lot.

However, I've found only a few looking at the overlaps and conversations.

If you could help me find my #MBE people here, I'd be grateful.

(Please reblog.)

Apparently, it’s rude to poke someone in the forehead and say, “skip intro,” when they start talking to you.

Oof, this hit me in the chest when I saw it, so am passing it on.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a thousand times: Encouraging kids to be who they are is suicide prevention.

I sat by an election denier on the airplane and he started poking me in the arm to be emphatic about his views on people stealing ballots secretly and the airplane was full and I couldn’t move anywhere so I started explaining the yellow fever in very great detail, all the way down to telling him about the bloody vomit that looks like coffee grounds and it worked. He stopped talking to me. The moral of this story is you can’t out-weird an academic; our toolset is too vast. #vastearlyamerica

Friendly #Mastodon Tip of the Day 14

You can create lists to keep up with your favorite accounts - whether they are news, entertainment, education etc.

It's like your own personal feed.
This is best to do on PC. Here are the steps:

1. Follow the account.
2. Press the 3-dotted button next to the bell button.
3. Click on "Add or Remove from Lists".
4. Congrats! You just added the first person to your list!

Follow me and 🔁 for daily #Fediverse tips.

Why do high-effect size instructional strategies endure over time? They do so because they have a growing body of research that reveals their efficacy in accelerating student growth. When we use technology to make learning relevant to real life, we amplify the impact of strategies that work. When relevant, use it. When not, skip the tech.

As a pre-Thanksgiving treat to myself, I am writing emails to other academics whose work I read and enjoyed!

Here's my template:
Dear Dr XX
I recently had the chance to read YYY and wanted to write to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I particularly enjoyed <fill in details> and am citing it in <project>. Thanks for producing such good work.

Cheers,
Mirya

Did you know that Loom "offers qualified educators unlimited recordings and access to premium features" in their Free Screen & Video Recorder for Education?

Well, I just stumbled across a new feature where you can include a Call to Action button right on your video! This quick video shows how it works - super simple.

Me trying to explain Home/Local/Federated to @racheltravis

"So #Mastodon is like a federation of starships...

We're on a starship with the Local folks, but we can communicate with anyone in the Federation of Starships.

Home is your private quarters where you've invited certain folks to come to a dinner party."

Some years ago, Theodora Goss created this resource of #PublicDomain #Poetry: "Poems of the Fantastic and Macabre." She mentioned it again recently and I returned to it with joy. Perhaps you will, too.

Today is a good kind of day. This is Valiente (Bengal) falling asleep with her binky (a Nerf disc) and Moose (a melanistic Bengal) giving some attitude while making biscuits with his massive claws. They run this house, I'm just part of the support team. 🐾

Hi, All,

Since I've been here there have been many folks that have shared lists of Birdsite accounts that are also on Mastodon. @WalterShaub started it for me. Huge list. Plus there are what I could glean with DeBirdify and just what I've picked up this week. It totals 467 accounts.

The file is at the Google Docs link below. If you can open it in Sheets, you can File->Download it. Save it as *.CSV (Comma Separated Values) file as that is the format Mastodon expects.

There are instructions everywhere. Here's one.

mguhlin.org/2022/11/tootorial-

The file is a text file so you can edit it as you like. Just be sure to delete entire lines.

If you already follow an account in the file, Mastodon will ignore it.

Just passing on the gifts.

FWIW. HTH.

My favorite thing about Mastodon so far is that all of a sudden I have posts about history, archaeology, astrophysics etc in my timeline because even though I follow mostly the same people here as tweeter everyone branched out once they got here and started boosting cool people they ran into here.

@maxplanckgesellschaft
✅ All links on Mastodon count as 23 characters, no matter how long they really are

URLs can be as long as you want, they will never exceed 23 characters of your limit.

There is no need to use a link shortener!
