Three principles for the academy in the era of digital thought:

1: An AI cannot pass a course.

2: AI contributions must be attributed and true.

3: AI use should be open and documented.

I explain why in our latest post for the Sentient Syllabus Project. Have a look at sentientsyllabus.substack.com

@mguhlin @edutooter @edutooters I have a one-page guide to the facilitation of learning that I use. The language is specific and the actions are professional choices available for each learning passage. Learning needs definition for shared clarity. Learning is underground; we can’t see until later when abilities and dispositions have changed. Here it is: tomdrummond.com/looking-closel

The internet is so great, it has everything, no matter how weird, like, for instance, just to totally make something up, if someone absent-mindedly swallowed the paper tag from a teabag, I bet there's a page about whether they should worry about that, ha ha, can you imagine, anyway has anyone seen that page

You’re not supposed to put a Qtip all the way into your ear because that’s where the reset button is

A “12 days of Christmas” type of document that fuses 12 highly effective instructional strategies (for all grade levels and content areas) and the digital tools that can best support them. Explore the definitions and research behind the learning intentions (LI) outlined above, in the sections below.

MASTODON TIP OF THE DAY: Did you know that you can turn on a TweetDeck-style, multiple-column interface to the web version of Mastodon? See the first attached picture to get an idea of the layout. You can even add a column for hashtags you are following, as I have done on mine!

To turn this view on, go into setting, click on Appearance in the left-hand-side menu, then check the box next to Advanced Web Interface (see the red arrow in the second image below):

@Richard @MrsDi @edutooters I’ve been talking with my media literacy #Mediazkit middle school students about AI quite a bit the past few years. I have a variety of related links on our “Wonder Links” page. Just search on the page for “AI” lessons.wesfryer.com/wonder-li #EduTooter

1) GPT-4 will be released in the next couple months—and yes, it will be a big deal.

"Overheard in AI
It’s always fun being in a house with lots of smart people because you hear things that you might not otherwise. Here’s a list of them. I don’t agree with all of them but they’re at least an interesting portrait of what at least some people do believe..."

I think all those “How to Mastodon” articles are going about it all wrong. They start by explaining federation and talking about how to choose a server. Yes that’s the first step but it’s also where we lose people. Just put that aside. Start by talking about how you use Mastodon, all the great apps, the culture, etc. Then end with the first step, that “all you have to do is pick a server to get started” and explain how. You have to hook a fish before you can reel it in.

An irregular reminder that calling this place "Mastodon" has a bit similar energy as saying "I just sent you a GMail."

"Fediverse" (or "fedi") is a better term.

Mastodon is just one of many software projects that talk to each other to create this multi-instance social network:

(kudos to @axbom for this fantastic infographic!)

There are blogs, Reddit-like communities, video instances and many more, all part of fedi.

Why do we call them “central banks” and not “apex creditors”?

@KaiserScience @MrsDi @edutooters Gartner presented a talk at a conference a few years back on the topic of ethics and “Digital Humanism”. The takeaway for me was that there are two different approaches: A “Digital Machinist” says “If it can be done, we should do it.” The Digital Humanist says “Yes, it CAN be done, but I’d it the right thing to do?”

Seems like the Digital Machinists are winning the ethics war…
