Hi everyone, I just successfully defended my PhD thesis.

@Russelli While knowing the theory of semiconductors would be good I'm not sure its entierly the best example of what I mean. It doesnt have a huge application on understanding novel circuits.

I think a better example might be how many EEs dont fully understand maxwell equations. I tried to explain how all electric circuits have a magnetic circuit dual to a room full of experienced electrical engineers. None of them could even understand the simple concept that magnets store energy in their magnetic field that under special circumstances can be extracted that is in many ways no different than a discharging inductor or even an inductors dual, a battery/capacitor.

They were all taught you cant extract energy from a magnet, and while that is true under normal circumstances there are special circumstances where you can, and because the idea of "you cant extract energy from a permanent magnet" was drilled into their head they couldn't accept the very obvious truth that this was incorrect under certain conditions.

@freemo I had an engineering lecturer who was a semi conductor physicist. He thought the engineering mindset was short sighted.

I don't know if we were taught to parrot anything. Its more like we were taught how solve for circuit parameters using linear algebra, DEs and hand drawn circuit diagrams. Its true we didn't spend much time understanding the physics of semi conductors, doping and depletion etc.

I also believe the statements everyone should be less ignorant about everything, and I should be less ignorant about all of the things too.

Would suggest the poll has a bit of a bias. Someone who chooses NO, but doesn't like to eat meat, what do they do?

Dear Qoto members,

We are seeking a third open-source hacker to join our not funded but good cause NLP code project github.com/russelljjarvis/Scie.

The dashboard tool helps scientists understand how complex their writing is relative to other sources of text and to help scientists compare themselves to other authors in their field. Contributing to this project would be a good opportunity for hackers who like modifying existing code and want to develop applications from scratch, and this code project could probably be reformulated to fit inside an academic research project.

To this end, we have developed a web-dashboard app that significantly utilizes nltk. The mostly built web application guides a user to perform a query of scientific papers from a user-selected science author.
The application then uses machine reading to assess how hard each piece of writing was to read, leading to an average “readability score” for that author.

We would are developing a manuscript that we would like to submit to JOSS and would welcome anyone as an author who could provide help or contribution. Also here is an example of the type of NLTK processing and python issues we may need help with.

@Russelli
Each service you have ton register too seperately

Also they are all federated and most use activity. So you can for example follow your peertube account from your account here. When you post a new video it will show just like a status update would for an account on this server.

@freemo I wonder, if I can use the qoto licence to download the client side gitlab program too? I assumed the answer might be yes, but then I was confronted with an authentication challenge so I gave up. I once used the free trial of Git Kraken, it was super ace, I was able to find snippets of code based on keyword search, that I had otherwise regarded buried.

@freemo Okay I read it. It looks like qoto is very STEM driven, and supporting of FOSS tool chains and services. I think I probably put thought into joining qoto at the time, and then downgraded my memory of what I had joined to FB/twitter alternative. Hey umm... when trying to login to these services, I think I got some auto logins that were based on redirections from logged in qoto. Then I bungled up that work flow, by trying to login with my actual email. How can I consult the appropriate credentials? And also thanks for all of your help @freemo I really like this STEM community. I checked out Funk whale, it looks like a FOSS alternative to spotify and pandora.

@freemo Yes, I used to use Dropbox on GitHub repositories, and this caused really weird conflicts and data corruption. I think the problem was Dropbox might take a break from trying to sync half way through a git reference or head. I think I will use a one way mirror. There must be some significant advantages of gitlab. Is it mainly about visualization, or is it integration? I can explore, I will mirror based on GitHub and see what happens.

@freemo 5 seconds is great, that is in the useable realm. Did you need to reconfigure to achieve this? Perhaps I just need to run an update?

@freemo Oh yeah, totally git is a nightmare for LFS. I spend a lot of time using the bfg, removing large files I accidentally committed. Really, Next cloud also. Wow qoto users are so lucky! I once tried to use Open Science Frame work, it is meant for open data storage it has some git like behavior, and the principle is awesome, but programmatic access to Open Science Frame is cumbersome.

@freemo

Also I noticed on Gitlab that you use spacemacs. I wonder if you have fast loading? I used spacemacs for a while but I couldn't get passed 30second loading times.

Is it possible to use the best of both gitlab and github, like can you make changes to one sync to the other?

@freemo Okay I joined.

Is gitlab better for large file storage?

The fact that the magpies included in this study seemed to mimic only sounds that were relevant and within their own territory suggests something about vocal learning in sedentaryspecies. It is perhaps not so much a matter of the size of the repertoire as was argued before, but of social organisation (although the two are also often interlinked). A bird with a complex social organisation, as has themagpie ,may require a map of its territory that is recorded not only visually but in an auditoryfashion.This study found that mimicry in Gymnorhinatibicen is used exclusively for sound features belonging to inhabitants in the bird's own territory, as distinct from visitors to that territory.
