Prefetching added a lot of complications to the memory control circuitry since prefetches and "regular" memory accesses both needed to use the bus and needed to avoid conflict. My blog post has more information on how 8086 prefetching works: righto.com/2023/01/inside-8086

The 8086 has a 6-byte prefetch queue (photo), which is tiny compared to the megabytes of cache on modern processors, but it increased performance by about 50%. Intel ran a bunch of simulations to decide on the 6-byte queue (4-byte on the 8088 with its narrower 8-bit bus).

Where are the "Republicans in turmoil" "chaos" "disarray" headlines?

Yeah, I see coverage of McCarthy not able to get the speakership. But if this were the Democrats, the melodrama from the media would be something to behold.

But these are real usability issues. They impact the folks who have been here a long time, but they have simply altered their behavior to minimize the friction. I can tell you that I don't miss having to recompile kernels, and I won't miss having to work around these issues either.

@futurebird How this one. The other problem with the current QT implementation at qoto is that it doesn't seem possible to reply with a QT. It seems to be an either or situation.

@futurebird Having never been on a server that doesn't support them, can you screen shot how this QT appears to you?

I’ve been in or around politics for over a half-century now.

I’ve watched as corporations ransacked our system.

In 1952, the corporate share of federal tax revenue was 32%. In 2020, it was down to 7%.

Here’s how we break the corporate oligarchy and return power to the people.

WordPress URL stupidity.

I have an apparently controversial opinion: that URLs that do not exist should return 404. WordPress disagrees, vehemently, and always tries to either redirect to "what you might have meant", or, even worse, just returns...
