Nation Relieved As Politicians Too Busy Bickering To Push Their Terrible Ideas On The Country

U.S. - The nation reported it was relieved Friday as it appeared that politicians were so busy bickering with one another that they didn't have much time to work on their terrible ideas for running the country.As Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi began to fight with one another, the nation breathed a sigh of relief as they were distracted from...

I think the most interesting things about this article about abortion is that the word "mother" never appears. Instead it says : "or to save the life of the woman." words matter. These words are chosen to drive an ideological agenda.

Trump abortion restrictions effective immediately

WASHINGTON (AP) — Taxpayer-funded family planning clinics must stop referring women for abortions immediately, the Trump administration said Monday, declaring it will begin enforcing a new...

@jeremiah
"There are some exceptions, including for victims of human trafficking and asylum-seekers who were denied protection in another country."

So...if someone is seeking asylum, they accept it in the first country they enter that grants it to them, if it's not granted they move on.

I understand wanting to be in another country, but is it asylum if one left a safe country to go to there? I'm not sure what qualities as official asylum.

For example, if someone went to Canada, was granted asylum, they wouldn't legitimately claim asylum in the US unless Canada was unsafe for them as well... Is that right?

@Fatih19 I tend to differentiate between climate change and... the crisis. The crisis is a political tool to align governments and economies according to the ideology of an extreme political perspective.

The conversation seems to go like this: Yield to my demand to align all governments and economies to my extreme position, or else you're an evil denier who should be silenced.

In that context, it's hard to have a fruitful discussion or make progress toward any solution.

♲ @thegibson@hackers.town: Things were not worse then.

two things happened to destroy the modeled future that we lost.

one, 9/11... we lost our future in the states that day... and due to that, much of the rest of the world did too due to our influence.

two, 2008...

the consumerization of IT DID NOT make anything better.

that was the lock-in for surveillance capitalism.

in the 90's, while the tech wasn't mature, we had the frontier you mentioned, and it made everything better...

it was freedom... and freedom that I work daily to restore.

What climate change crisis is really about. Spoiler : it's not the climate.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff recently admitted that the Green New Deal was not conceived as an effort to deal with climate change, but instead a “how-do-you-change-the-entire economy thing”

Trump approval higher than Obama's was.

I'm surprised. We form our opinions based on media, as we don't know the guy ourselves. With an objective media (which I know is impossible), I wonder how different these approval numbers would be. Wildly different, I suspect.

the old internet was like running through untrammelled snow and exploring the possibilities of what this could become, internet today is like being boxed into a train car with a bunch of other cattle and jabbed with tasers

How to win in business and limit independent thought :

Step 1: put your competitors out of business by being the place that has it all.

Step 2: with competitors out of business or limited to tiny market share, begin changing your model to only give access to things that match your ideology.

Step 3: having established your business as the market leader, push for new legislation over your market category so that only you can handle the additional overhead and keep competition down.

I'm extremely pleased to launch Run Your Own Social: How to run a small social network site for you friends.

This is a guide book to running a small, tight-knit federated social network server. It comes from my year of experience running Friend Camp. It's focused largely on SOCIAL solutions, though it does touch on the technical.

I've tried to keep it technology-neutral, and it should be a pretty easy read for anyone who's been on the fediverse for a while.

@zetetic
Thanks for the info!

I'm hesitant about maintaining too many / multiple accounts and appreciate . The rules are more concise, but align pretty well with yours, I think. Don't advocate things that are illegal and treat others with excellence. There's also an emphasis on reaching out and interacting with others you don't agree with, which I think we ought all to do.

@zetetic
I'm not really familiar with either instance. What's the background of quodverum? At first glance, the purpose of both seem very similar. Evidently it's not the same in actual implementation.

I'm disappointed at what I've seen from gab commented so far, likely the threads you're referring to that caused them to be blocked on quodverum... I haven't seen the Nazis Who Want To Kill Us All (tm) that some on the fedi were frantically warning about, but just comments seeming intent on destroying the ability of others to converse.

Here on mastodon there's always been the offer the top comments line : if you disagree with me you're a fascist and a nazi and people like you should be physically attacked into silence.

Then gab is going to join and proud open federation turns into demands for censorship, and I think : well they called me, someone who disagrees with everything that nazis and fascists stand for, a nazi and a fascist. This is certainly just more of the same : a desire for an echo chamber instead of the open web that's been nearly lost.

Now gab has joined and I'm wondering whether it's in effect not much more than a shelter for trolls who want to spam threads with garbage.

On the one hand people want to use open tools to shut down others through mandate and defederation, in the other side, is it going to be a group who wants to shut down others by shouting over them?

We need more like qoto: the desire to treat others with excellence while having and discussing different ideas.

Today would have been the 100th birthday of one of my favourite Doctor's, Jon Pertwee. Happy birthday, number three! #DoctorWho

I thought it silly that people would complain that a mythical creature (Ariel the mermaid movie I've never seen) was recast to be black in a remake, so I watched a video about it, thinking it would be ridiculous or racist, but I heard a line that has me thinking :

this is condescending pandering thinking that the black audience needs a black character, but instead of getting their own character with a story, they get a ******* hand me down.
