No, I didn't new Vishaps's compiler. Pretty interesting!

Maybe they should add it to oberon07.com/compilers.xhtml

My favourite one is miasap.se/obnc/

I always think that if you're making a new theory and it's *more* complex than the old theories it's trying to replace, you probably did something very wrong.

The comments on this answer are very interesting and explain some physical advantages of the unix pipes-and-filters strategy with many small programs.

Sure, it's great for composability and unanticipated code reuse, but it also helped with use of physical RAM!

I really should get back into drawing. I enjoy it far more than programming, but it doesn't pay the bills. I actually learned to draw long before I got into computer science or anything related to technology. I did this drawing of Richard Stallman 2 years ago.

Trouble is, I only get the inspiration to do art once every blue moon. It's really hard to get motivated. My time is otherwise consumed writing code and wielding a soldering iron.

I wonder whether one could abstract the MVC model into something like "data and control streams" and get from there to something like the Unix pipe model but for arbitrary networks of runtime-composable components.

@nanook

I used too.
And liked it. A lot.
I spent a huge amount of my free time in the last 2.5 years to port it to , a fork.

But since they removed from the Steering Committee I realized that relying on it is an hazard for anybody outside the US.

Yes. It's one of my source of inspiration. In particular the language.

Sorry @pluralistic but this "mind-control ray" framing is a bit of a strawman.

You don't need mind control to statistically orient a population if you control a sufficient amout of the informations that each of its members receives and also monitor their behaviour 24x7.

Such influence is not individual: no single person changes her mind just because of what , and so on... show them.

BUT they can raise or reduce the probability of a certain behaviour among a population by influencing those more inclined to it, and cohordinating the positive/negative feedbacks among the rest of the population.

Thus the problem is not economic, put geo-political.

The money they get from is a tiny tiny fraction of the power the get from the personal data they collect.

Data that do NOT come only from , CDNs or Apps and services like , or : they also come from any third party application run on their services!

And the vast maiority of people influenced by Google (and friends) are not US citizens.

So ultimately these corporations are weapons, like mines capillarly spread all over the world.

As such they should not be simply broken as monopolies, but disarmed!

Breaking them into smaller companies is not only much needed but NOT ENOUGH!

Personal data collection and exchange should be out-lawed and prohibited world wide and the distribution of software that technically allow it, likewise forbidden.

All the data collected so far should be destroyed.

And in the long run, we should cap corporate dimensions (number of employees, number of customers, total consumption and so on...) so that something similar cannot happen again.

Though Google insists that this was just an industry practice, the leaked document reveals that Google kept this a secret from publishers. Its internal presentations claim that they made $230m in 2013 alone from this practice.

Something very wonderful, written in HTML by a very wonderful person, is now live. I didn't make this site, but it's an entire site defending RMS.

The cancellers are officially on notice.

@shusha

I forgot to say: all of this is why people look for more general explainations of what is going on.

Because in this case, checking sources or looking for evidence or even "following the money" was very easy. And yet, three thousand people joined the mob against a single man.

Which is an autistic hacker, but that doesn't matter much.

Why this happened?
Cui prodest?

Can it be prevented in the future?

It's difficult to look for answers to these questions without going beyond the case in point.

At least for me.

But I'd really welcome you insight about them!

@shusha

As a father of 3 daughters, I think I understand your perspective.

But one of the issues of this whole story is that the struggle you are talking about, has been misdirected toward a man who was not sexist, mysogin or transphobic at all... just weird.

It's a long story, and I do not want to annoy you if you don't care about the details, but well known feminists and transpeople (and even several women that I personally know and know by decades) have either signed the letter in his defence or publicly wrote against this attack to his person.

I could provide you a few link but you find most interesting ones stallmansupport.org/articles-i

You can trust my words or not, but you can easily check that even the attackers have retracted some their accusations to reduce the legal risks for the signers rms-open-letter.github.io/appe

So here is the thing: the alligations against Stallman are false.

And yet, they managed to force him to resign from FSF 2 years ago and now that he is coming back, they raised this new campaign again.

And if you look at the organizations that signed the harrassing letter early, you will notice how many have BigTech among their platinum sponsors (Google in particular)

Since 2013 FSFE (that joined the lynching mob early with their own letter) takes more than 10% (but less than 20%) of its whole income from : fsfe.org/donate/thankgnus.en.h

So ultimately the struggle of women and trans working in IT (and in in particular) has been weaponized to target a single man.

Now I'm happy to stay on the struggle, but here we have to ask which one?

The one strumentalized and weaponized or the one of the victim of such attack?

I'd argue: both!

But in this hatred climate it's very difficult to talk with the people whose suffering has been weaponized.

And this is heart-breaking.
And dangerous, I think.

Because it won't fix problems, but hide them.

Anyway... thanks for your link, I'll read as soon as possible.

And if you want to talk about the struggles of women in tech and how they could be addressed, I'm very interested.

#diritto #giustizia

Roman Anin's apartment being raided by the #FSB today is most probably in connection with this story (from 2016):

The least we can do now is read and spread it. Clearly there is a reason why Russian authorities would like to stifle this kind of reporting.

Just like it was writen in the first time.
With "olio di gomito". 😉
("olio di gomito" is an Italian way to say "with a lot of hard and valuable work")

But beware: you can't build the SAME software system from scratch AND make it simple.

No matter how good and simple are your tools (language, compilers, operating systems...) if you want to build , , , and so on, you are just going to fail and waste huge amount of time.

You are addicted to primitive tools (mis)designed to lock everybody in and keep powerful élites in control of your computing.

The next generation of that I envision will be very different.

Designed to empower.
