Make it nice writing, include a nice and relevant image. Repeat once a week or so, changing the message and image.
In personal welcome messages to new users, I always like to include a couple of Mastodon Guide links -- most new people need that, the Fediverse is VAST and Mastodon itself is full of controls and settings, privacy levels, Federation, etc.
Guide is definitely NEEDED.

@Sphinx I've seen that too. For me it took some time since I made some connections and started to figure out how things work here. I believe it's discouraging for many.
When I joined mastodon a few months ago I was greeted by @design_RG (even with a link to a Mastodon guide in Spanish) and that helped.

@Sphinx yes, it's puto (male) or puta (female).
Yes, I am fluent in Portuguese and not so much in Español; there's this thing that we think we can get away with Portuguese words, so similar sometimes. Which word was the give away? Conosco ? (with us)

@miguel31416 @Sphinx Which reminds me, I was going to suggest to Sphynx that maybe he could try out the Slowly pen pal application, we can make friends all over the world and it's great for language practice too.
Please consider it -- my own Spanish in writing really improved since I first started to correspond with Spanish speaking folks.
