4 died in Benghazi: They had Hillary testify for 11 hours, held 33 hearings, and launched a 4-year probe.

👋 Hello #fediverse! I'm going into a meeting at 4ET to talk about our newsroom's social media options.

If you think our station and other NPR stations should have a Mastodon server and a broader presence in the #fediverse, pls boost this post. If you have thoughts, please reply, I want to hear them!

@freemo I suppose part of a response should incorporate how 'professional' the respondents should be. If you're looking for people who derive *all* their income from music performance / composition, then I'm not qualified. But I'll give you my take, having played with others for a good part of my adult life, usually for pay.

Timing is pretty much everything. It's foundational to producing something listenable, vs cacaphony. It's the first thing we're taught, for those who have taken lessons. After awhile, it becomes innate. We count not only the beats, but the rests between them. We may use slightly different techniques, and that's fine, as long as the intervals are adhered to.

This also varies a bit by type of music. For example, symphonic music is much more rigid than more modern forms. You have people adhering to an as-written standard for every note and rest on the page, led by a conductor (which is another whole conversation as to his / her role in an orchestra). The players do know the piece from memory, having practiced the 'repitoire' for years before they got to that major orchestra. And, yet, they still follow the conductor for basic timing. S/he may make an error, but they'll all make the error together. I'll say that in most cases, the average listener won't detect errors (and part of being a good musician is knowing how to cover them up!) But they occur in every performance (especially live.)

Continuing in a more modern vein, you'll sometimes hear about the interaction between bass and drums, for example. Those two set the foundation, the table -- for everyone else in the group, so if they're not in sync with one another, you have what we colloquially refer to as 'a bucket of shit'.

Now, within that construct, bass and drums don't have to play notes or rests in the same places, and the most interesting pieces, imo, occur when they don't (think jazz, as an example). But they'll always 'come back' and sync up with one another. Actually, the argument I'm making is that they were never truly *out* of sync; it just sounded like they were.

Finally (for this post), we'll talk about bass / drums a little more, where they can play 'on the beat', 'in front of the beat' or 'behind the beat'. This is more the job of the bassist, and all have their place in music. When the two of them are 'locked in' together, the best way I can describe it is magic. A good rhythm section can carry mediocre soloists; a bad one can't make a band sound great, no matter how talented the others are.

Does that start to get to the point of your question?

Just a reminder, being a horrible person shoukdnt be tolerated simply because they claim their religion says so.... **YOU** choose one of any number of interpritations of your religion that caused you to be a horrible person. Thats not your religions fault, thats just you finding an excuse to be a shit human. No one needs to tolerate you being a shit human just because your a religious shit human.

That is all...

I don't care if Mastodon gains millions more users... I just want it to have the right kind of users.

People who are not assholes. People who care about others. People who are thoughtful and considerate, and are not here to attack others and spread hate speech.

I'll take the good people in smaller numbers over the masses of asses.

I've always been part of countercultures, subcultures, and small groups... and I prefer it that way.

@Toonces In the comics, 'Tiger' is MJ"s pet name for Peter. It's a tie-in / promotion of 'canon', as the fans like to call it.

Originally in the comics, MJ didn't know PP was Spider-Man (they changed / added it at some point; I have no idea when).

Pro tip for recreational book readers:

If you are more than ~20% into the book and, after putting it down for other activities (like sleep), aren't eager to resume where you left off -- stop reading. Life is short. Move on to a book that you can't wait to keep reading.

This is especially true for library books, because other people may be waiting for the one you find meh.

The stochastic nature of interconnection in contemporary 'globalised' 'culture' means there is no Good way to do things, only a commitment to continuous striving to do things less badly. As a starting point, rather than basing action on the assumption that you are correct, begin by assuming you are incorrect and reevaluate.

@AndyLowry @dotsonapage @freemo This does a good job of summarizing why I chose this server when creating my own account.

On the one hand, those who found this info on their own before joining are probably the envisioned userbase, anyway. But I do hope this thread / toot goes at least a little viral; right now, I fear it's only really visible on the local qoto instance, and 'we' are already aware. Perhaps it is more visible in the fediverse (?) than I realize. One can hope.

In any case, I'm glad I found the qoto.org domain, and didn't just look for the 'most popular' one to start out with. The content I've seen here so far aligns nicely with the as-stated goals, IMO.

I also signed up for Post; between the two, it has more of the look / feel of the ; enough that I'd term it a younger clone. At first, that's what I felt would win hearts / minds--a cloned UI. But this platform and the open-source infra is definitely growing on me.

The mobile capability existing here is a big plus, as well (I'm writing this via Tusky). Not sure how far away the Post community is from having same, but not having it 'now' is definitely going to stunt their growth.

I'll stop here, before I'm tempted to use more of the block :) But no longer having to squeeze a thought into 255 chars? Yes, please.

I'm delighted by all the goodies and benefits I happened into on mine here at qoto. The starting text block is at 64K, which is huge in comparison to most, for example. The description page at qoto.org/about/more will give you a rundown, and I think you'll be pleased and surprised by the list of features.

Despite the recent enormous surge in activity and memberships, the server is still speedy (as is the administration). I've had zero trouble with any unpleasant characters lurking about. The management is pro-active in handling issues quickly. The underlying reason for its existence is as a science and science education instance, so there are many intelligent and well-spoken folks about.

Even though there are now over 25,000 users, the admin is reachable and responsive.

Hope you check us out!

As people are leaving Bird for good, I find that many are engaged in what I believe is a dangerous and misguided game of mixing apples and oranges. After what just happened, and all that it has revealed about reliance on for-profit corporate entities for interpersonal and community interaction, why advocate for another such environment? Substack is already known garbage, and Post provides no future-proofing. When I say, “seize the means of your social media production,” this is why.
