Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via #StreetsblogUSA, read their article. #bikelanes #bikes #cities #transportation #mobility #sharrows #infrastructure #urbanplanning

How do we tax unliquidated asset value increases? In there surely lies an answer to a fairer taxation system? People (especially very rich people) are sitting on squillions of £ of inflated assets which cannot be touched by the exchequer until they are sold.

Anybody interested in #Manchester interest groups #manchesterwine #manchesterbeer #manchesterfood ?

I don’t know whether I’m going about this the right way for Mastadon? Help appreciated.

Politics & The other place

Just come back from visiting the other place - full of anger and (righteous) rage at the state we’re in. Decent people being incessantly wound up by MSM pro right wing agenda. It is horrible.

Just an oddity to end the evening. This white bird, photographed a week ago in our back yard, is a gold-crowned sparrow, like the other birds in the picture. It's a leucistic sparrow rather than an albino as it does have some coloration on its wings and the eyes are not pink.

We've seen it a couple times since, but we don't expect it will live long, as every predator in the area can see it from far away.

So a toast to all the white sparrows among us. May you escape notice when necessary.

Twitter me: angry person following lots of angry people.

Mastodon me: enquiring person, who wants to learn from people who know more than me. And discuss / ask questions re my interests.

So far, the water’s lovely….

Hello!

We are a small shop in #Uxbridge which is in London "technically" but if you say you are in London when you're here people give you a dead arm.

We #print and #embroider stuff for people and try to make printing and embroidering stuff for people as fun as possible.

We have come from Twitter with the other hoards, but don't worry, we've wiped out feet.

We mainly tweet about #shop life and the more interesting things that happen to us.

Thank you!

How far back in history do you have to go before the days of the week (monday, tuesday, etc) no longer line up... in other words, how long have we been consistently keeping track of days of the week as a society before it breaks down...

@aliceroberts I think some of us are hoping to be redeemed by Mastodon. Twitter was propelled by Brexit for me. Full of anger at the meaningless destruction of the U.K. post 2012. After Brexit now wreaks it’s inevitable havoc on peoples lives it is going to be difficult, but at least the arguments have stopped. And we can agree. We all lost.

Something I’ve noticed from lurking here the last few days: the attitudes in conversation are far better than Twitter. Because of the lack of trolls, people here don’t assume a challenging reply is an attack, instead they engage in a healthy debate. I like that.

A key thing I've learned about Mastodon: When you find people you know and want to keep up with, don't just follow them — add them to a list!

Merely following is not enough, b/c their posts may not show up in your feed at a time you're logged on. Unlike FB or Twitter, Mastodon has no algorithm to resurface your friends' posts from hours or days ago.

So create a list called "Friends" and check it when you're on. This will ensure that you see what they posted while you were away.

My niece went to the fab National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park and found a game I wrote over 30 years ago running on an Amstrad PC.

Which resulted in me digging around for old source code for that and some adventure games I wrote. Hard to believe I wrote this code now...
