#Herbaria are such collections. They store many many samples of usually dried and pressed plants. They are basically a #library of #plant #species.
Just like a #librarian, I need to keep order in the chaos, help scientists and visitors to get access or send material on loan. I also provide help to interpret old labels, and I update and reidentify the material.

This is where I work: the #herbarium at the #NaturalHistoryMuseum in London:

So, I am a #botanist. This means, I'm not a gardener (sorry, I can't help with your dying houseplants) but that I am trained to identify and name #plants. Applying the correct name to an organism is important. It's the same a calling a person with the correct name with the difference that plants aren't offended, but it could cause that you are poisoned, use the wrong medicine, grow the wrong stuff or make bad policies or business ideas and waste time and money.

Hi all: Less Twitter and more Mastodon exploration. I’m a university professor, technology educator, data analyst, and futurist. I’m intrigued by all things ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; and many other things I have yet to discover! Filed under: currently living in a college world.

Greetings all! Ron here again. I would like to share more details about my research focus. This is the first of several toots I'll post introducing my reasons for being on Mastodon.

As an assistant professor, I focus mostly on signal and image processing in neuroscience applications. My platforms of choice are and Programming. If you are working with these tools, feel free to "at" me any time if I can help or you know something interesting! I also have worked in , particularly in simulating neural networks with Hodgkin-Huxley equations. That was some years ago, but mathematical modeling never gets old!

I look forward to sharing my work with the community as well as learning more about what each of you are doing!

I may lack sufficient reach at this point to get meaningful responses to this poll, but here it goes... and please feel free to boost for reach!

Would you be interested in a free (virtual) training workshop? If so, select your preferred option in the survey. You can also reply if you want me to "at" you with more details later.

I will be conducting training for my new research collaborators in early 2023 and could open it up to those outside the lab if there is sufficient interest.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT affiliated with PsychoPy and don't develop it, but I do use it.

This should be my last introduction toot! I mentioned my professional focus ( signal analysis) in my last toot. Now, for my other non-research engagements...

I am a who uses tools like and to prototype fun projects. I have my own fleet of 3d printers and support equipment.

As a signal processing engineer, I'm also very interested in (software-defined radio). I'm working on two pet projects right now employing SDR and my maker tools for backyard and satellite signal reception. While not entirely novel end-goals, the work is very engaging and rewarding! I hope to package the results for science outreach in in the near future.

Everyone should expect neuroimaging research toots from me as well as updates on my projects and resources for and engagement in the classroom. I hope to contribute to by sharing my demos, resources, and projects for bringing innovative thinking, science, and engineering into the classroom.

I love and outdoor activities. I'm a novice in (microscope as well as DSLR) and am looking for hints and suggestions for my entry into . Any advice? Let me know! I have a strong love of and , so expect my gushing about fish on occasion. I also have a pet parakeet, so expect some bird antics along the way! It can't all be work and seriousness, after all!

- my phone

- high-end graphics editing suite, that I have minimal experience with in the photo editing component (but rather a lot in the DTP one).

And a test of Mastodon's hashtag relevance to anyone seeing this post.

Those of us migrating from #Twitter (like me) should read this article. I've been here a few days, and have already come to the realization that #Mastodon is an entirely different ecosystem. The worst we can do is treat it as Twitter 2.0.

This is a special community worth preserving. Some of the features that might strike the Twitter user as archaic were designed purposely to protect people over here. Let's try to respect the existing culture, not change it. 👇

I mentioned this in a private message to someone recently about why a small handful of servers block qoto. I wanted to reiterate it here for the new comers on QOTO who dont know the history:

So there are some servers out there that demand every server int he network block every instance they do, and if a server doesnt block an instance they block then they block you in rettatliation.

Their reason for this is quite flawed but it goes like this.. If we federate with a bad actor instance and we boost one of their posts then their users will see it and defeat the purpose of the block. The problem is, this isnt how it actually works. If they block a server and we boost it, they wont see the boost, thats how blocks work.

The issue becomes even more complicated when you consider the fact that these servers, by virtue of their policy, have huge block lists where they block tons of major servers. So in order to satisfy them we too would have to block a huge number of servers.

This means you have a choice, you either join a server that isnt blocked, but has a huge block list themselves, or, you join a server that doesnt block and be blocked by a small handful of servers. Obviously that means on QOTO you will have bigger view of the world than you would on any of these others servers. In fact QOTO has onne of the largest federation footprints of any server in the network.

I want to also explain why we choose the decision we did. Years ago when this controversy started and servers across the fediverse started blocking there was a divide of people taking sides. WOTO was one of the few servers that didnt take sides and allowed people read content from any server (but with strict hate speech rules). This caused a huge influx of people,s pecifically from the LGBTQ community, onto our server. It turns out many people relied on us not-blocking for their physical safety. There were big name biggots (like milo yanappolus) who were on the network. They used their accounts here to watch his account for doxing so they could warn themselves and their community and protect themselves accordingly. In fact we added a feature just for them called subscriptions which allowed them to monitor accounts without following them so they could do so anonymously.

In tthe end for the safety of the LGBTQ community here we refused to engage in mass server blocking and instead encouraged our users to block servers on an individual basis and provided access to block lists for them to do so. But some really misguided servers blocked us anyway.

Thankfully the servers blocking us are few and far between and are limited to only the most excessive and aggressive block lists. As I said, QOTO has one of the largest federation footprints on the fediverse,

Me too! New and definitely out of my element on this server in terms of what you all bring to the table. Smart and thoughtful bunch here! It has been a fantastic experience and I am really enjoying being part of it all.

@arinbasu

I am obviously biased but I think we have hands down one of the best servers on the fediverse. Drama is very rare here and when someone comes who does tend to start it they never last long. Amazing for an instance which doesnt limit the topics we are allowed to talk about and generally encourages free speech (hate speech not being free speech).

Its the first time I've ever seen a social media community actually work and get a long. I love it here.

@DrK

It makes me really happy to hear that. Me and many others here have committed a lot of effort to try to have a community mature enough to talk and not fight, to be respectful and decent without the need for much if any censorship (there is always the occasional bad actor, but its rare).

Myself and im sure my fellow long-time qoto members all appreciate very much hearing that you feel safe and at home here, and most important, you are happy to be here.

I too think this is really a good decent server; if you check the local timeline, you will discover nice folks around. The editor is well designed, and this server actually allows you to integrate other federated tools, that's fantastic. I also found nice uptime and so on.
