Why city planning needs diverse perspectives.
Touring possible commuter cycling routes.
What I saw - Smooth pavement. Separate from traffic. Shade. Not too busy. Perfect.
What my female partner saw - Blind corners. No lighting. No escape routes. Too few users. Wouldn’t use this route.

Interesting. Public transport and active travel need to work together

I tracked every bus in Great Britain today. Then I calculated how far you could get in 45 minutes leaving central Leeds at about 16:00. That's the red line. The green line is what the timetable says. The methodology for "averaging" the isochrones is quite clever. I'll share it.

I am now compiling a list of all servers who may have an interest in joining the United Federation of Instances.
Quite a few instances have already signed up.
Please reach out to me, all servers of any size are welcome!
This is non binding, its just to get a preliminary list. You can withdrawl at any time and dont have to go through the application process. I just want to know what servers to reach out to once we begin kicking things off.
If you are a server admin please let me know **in DM** if you have an interest and I will add you to the (for now) private list. I want to only release the list once we have enough momentum so please respond in DM only.
for those who are new to this you can read the proposal here:
https://ufoi.gitlab.io/constitution/united_federation_of_instances_proposal.pdf
You can read the early draft of the full bylaws here:
https://ufoi.gitlab.io/constitution/united_federation_of_instances_bylaws.pdf
Both of these will still undergo a lot of modification. For information on how to join the conversation see this post:

You can see the progress and conversation specifically at the official repo here:
Holy hell, I only opened up applications for member sof the UFoI and we already have over 200,000 members total in the application list (the sum of all users across all instances applying).... amazing!
@sbrackenborough I had time to check in on the Pre-Raphaelites too. I liked this little robin in the edges of the famous ‘Ophelia’ #London #art #tatebritain
honestly the reason I am leaving twitter (as it is a process that's my finished yet) isn't that Elon took over, or that it has started openly catering to nazis rather than covering that fact with fig leaves...
it's that finally a critical mass of people with sufficiently diverse backgrounds was moving to a place I like better.
that's it. I haven't enjoyed my time on twitter for years. it has been bad and dangerous for marginalised people this whole time.
it's just that people were there.
Wrapping up to face the cold on my bike and head to Tate Britain #London. 1 hr by public transport vs 27 mins on two wheels !
When I was a kid I was bummed to find out that "x-ray specs" were a hoax. But astronomers can do it for real!
Here, new infrared images from the Webb telescope pierce the global haze on Titan to reveal the intriguing landscape beneath.

How does our brain come up with new ideas and insights? We propose that insights are unexpected rewards or shortcuts found during mental navigation and correspond to the rapid emergence of new concept fields in the hippocampus.

How can we manipulate our worlds to improve our minds?
If you listen to this week’s episode of “All in the Mind” on @BBCRadio4, you can catch the inimitable @samgilbert1 talking about his work on “cognitive offloading” and metacognitive control.

(1/9) Momentous news today: a clinical trial shows that #Alzheimers drug #lecanemab reduces amyloid in the brain & slows cognitive decline in patients. This breakthrough has been hailed as "the beginning of the end" for Alzheimer’s treatments by Prof John Hardy @UCLIoN @UKDRI 🧵

This is so exciting & an incredible day for Alzheimer’s research. It’s far from perfect - modest effects and risks - so lots to do and research still needed - but after so many failures and controversies it’s nice to feel the buzz of optimism again! https://twitter.com/bbcworld/status/1597839164300578817
