What's interesting about the cycle tracks in London now they are reaching into less central parts of the city is that you see just totally normal folk getting about on them. Pics show a gardener, parents, someone on a tricycle. Just normal

Starting tomorrow, I'm going to be indulging my deep love of #Christmas music by posting a #carol a day for #Advent, as I've done over at The Other Site for the last couple of years. If you'd like to catch up with those lists, they're here:

Hello world (and universe)! I'm a #space journalist from #Canada who writes about #spaceflight, #rockets, #astronomy, #StarTrek, #NASA and whatever else is trending that day.
I recently got to talk to an #astronaut about cosplay, of all things. That was unexpected. https://www.space.com/european-female-space-station-commander-2001-cosplay
My favourite stories cover #diversity, #stem and other ways to make our universe a little bit more inclusive.
I am blundering about here on Mastodon as a beginner ... but believe in showing others that learning and growing at any age is a good thing. :)
In my spare time I enjoy #archaeology #history #libraries #gaming ... and I'm also a beginner #python coder, because why not.
Drop by and say hi!
One of my favorite #birds to see out in the wild - an Indian Paradise Flycatcher- this one seen a few weeks ago at Hunasinakere in Hassan Taluk, #Karnataka. They seem so ethereal & otherworldly upon first sight!

I used to say Twitter was only as good - or bad - as who you followed. Follow good/interesting/ funny people, and you're gold. That wasn't 100% true, because Twitter liked to guess what might "promote engagement" and put it in your feed - but it was mostly true.
Best thing about mastodon? No computer showing me what it guesses I might like. My feed is who I follow (and what they boost) - nothing more. That's honestly delightful. I can go look at what people I don't follow post - but I don't have to, and it's not forced in front of me.
I used to brace myself logging into Twitter - you had to wade thru the sewer to find the good bits. But my tiny following list on mastodon produces more good stuff than Twitter did - I can only imagine how nice it will be once the birdsite dies off and I track down more good people to follow.
I’m #thankful for all of the volunteers running all of the #Mastodon instances out there who are trying to build safe, positive, productive communities. Who willingly give of their own time in addition to their family, work, and other obligations. Who put people before profit. Who believe that when we build bridges and connect with one another, we can accomplish anything together.
Here's my new hobby which you #TwitterMigration folks might also want to try.
Watch your Local timeline for people just arriving or making their first post. (It's not stalking. Really.)
And then reply with something like, "Hello and welcome! 👋"
Sometimes that starts a conversation. Sometimes you wind up following each other.
Why do that? Maybe to be as kind as all the wonderful folks who welcomed us here?
So, go ahead. Pay it forward. Make a new friend. It's fun. And, you know, social.

A research team at USC has figured out a way to use genetically engineered fungi to convert polyethylene waste into pharmacologically useful metabolic products.
(This story is great because it features three of my favourite things: reduction of plastic waste, fungi, and drugs, LOL. 😁)

#introduction 👋 Hi all - I'm a psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist at UCL.
I mostly think about how to link brain and behaviour to subjective experience, and try to design experiments to understand the computations supporting the latter.
This often (but not always) comes under the umbrella of #metacognition research.
Lab website is here: http://metacoglab.org/
I also enjoy writing for a general audience and published a popular science book, Know Thyself, about the science of metacognition (http://metacoglab.org/book)
My interests/passions include theatre, physiotherapy, neurology, music, singing in a classical chorus, reading books, lively debate, dogs…
