Qoto.org blocking, genocide mention
@jq @szczezuja @matt @FediThing I'm like 2 weeks into my Fediverse experience. As you can see from my profile picture, I'm a Black guy. I picked Qoto because I had to pick someplace to start, and I thought their policies were reasonable. I'm OK with handling my own block list, for now.
I haven't seen anything at all that's disturbing in the Qoto local feed. I'm still trying to evaluate whether I'm in the right place or not.
I'm not happy to hear that people aren't happy with Qoto's policies. But I'm personally not going to migrate elsewhere until I see something concretely that I disagree with.
But I'll just say, keep in mind that when you defederate an entire open instance, it has an impact on a bunch of people who have no idea what's going on.
I've got a lot of hope for the potential of the Fediverse, but if it's going to be on new users to learn all the backstory of every instance, I think it's going to make adoption by normal people much less likely.

Is it possible to proxy my Fediverse identity?
I don't want to run my own instance, but I also want my identity to be instance independent. For example, if I was @me@acjay.com, but my actually presence remained hosted by Qoto. I believe this would require Qoto to be able to publish my posts under my domain rather than @acjay.
Does this concept exist on any instances?
Note that many email providers allow this under their "custom domain" functionality

The reason I singled out Google and Microsoft is because a lot of people have identities established with them already (e.g. email addresses and OAuth), so if they wanted, they could also slide into the business of providing people's Fediverse identities, too.
Imagine if you could simply assume you could reach someone's Fediverse presence by adding an @ to the beginning of their email account.

Literally stuff people said back in the day. Blame the UX for bad conveyance.
People like to say that the instance you choose doesn't matter, but it does.
Your local instance affects discoverability—this isn't a big issue with email because we don't _want_ discoverability—and it affects the type of content you'll see in your local and federated timelines.
Those factors will play a big part in your initial period of exploration of the fediverse. Social media is only _partially_ following people who you already know. That's not so much the part that is throwing people off.

@Ilovelemons I'm using the web client for my instance, so I think I'm just getting whatever data the instance has. But I don't yet understand exactly how federation works.
@Patricia yup, I'm with ya on that. On Twitter, I think it's one reason my following was pretty modest. But I think that's a good thing. More followers, more problems!
Does my instance only get copies of statuses on other instances if at least one person on here follows them?
I run into situations where I find friends on other instances and most of their posts are missing. I'm guessing it's because we're all new to Mastodon and aren't being followed by people on every instance.
Is it then not possible to reply to an older post of theirs from this account?

@virginiaheffernan That was tried. HuffPost covered his primary campaign as "entertainment" rather than "news". It didn't work, because Trump was effective at engaging his base regardless of how mainstream media treated him.
And if he's not getting the coverage he needs to remain relevant, he will do something egregious to get it. So far, I would conclude that hoarding documents at Mar-a-Lago was a good move for him, because he has yet to be meaningfully punished for it, and it keeps him in the news.
