Ethical question: Someone I don't know but share a common interest with posted a picture of a very cool delivery he got with the address blocked out but the tracking number clearly visible. Do I tell him that the shipper gives a partial address online and will give a complete address and photo of the delivered package if contacted by email? or is someone else's OpSec none of my business.

@antares how coukd tellibg them privately in any way be unethical?

@freemo

"Hey dude,

I just cyberstalked you and I thought you might want to know.

Sincerely,

An anonymous account you've never heard of before"

@freemo Also I've tried before when someone left a ZIP+4 visible and I pointed out that I could resolve that number to their apartment building. They blocked me.

@antares people are crazy, them blocking you means nothing morally

that some recipients shoot the messenger doesn't mean the messenger was unethical, only the recipients. sharing useful information in well-meaning ways is good, whether the recipients will put it to good use or ignore it or get angry at you rather than at the information and their own mistake is up to them

@antares

I think you should reach out if it's not too inconvenient for you, and you could put it politely as, "Hey, I noticed that you blocked out your address so you must care about your privacy, but I wanted to make sure you knew that the tracking number defeats that."

You don't have to say anything about whether YOU tried to defeat it.
